A sheet in an electronic display is composed of a substrate containing an array of wire electrodes. The wire electrodes are preferably electrically connected to patterned transparent conductive electrode lines. The wire electrodes are used to carry the bulk of the current. The wire electrodes are capable of being extended away from the substrate and connected directly to the printed circuit board. The transparent conductive electrode (TCE) is used to spread the charge or voltage from the wire electrode across the pixel. It is a patterned film and must be at least 50% transparent, and, for most applications, is preferably over 90% transparent. In most display applications, the electroded surface of the electroded sheet has to be flattened. Use of a thin polymer substrate yields a light, flexible, rugged sheet that may be curved, bent or rolled.

A method of creating very large flat panel displays uses fiber and tubes containing wire electrodes to create the structure in a panel. However, there are several display types, especially those involving an electro-optic material like a liquid crystal, which require the electric field to be spread across the entire surface of the pixel or fiber. A method disclosed herein uses a conductive layer to spread the voltage applied to the wire electrodes in the fiber across the surface of the fiber. The conductive layer may be capacitively or resistively coupled to the wire electrode. In most display applications, a transparent conductive layer is required. The easiest and most cost effective methods to fabricate a transparent conductive layer use a transparent conductive polymer or carbon nanotubes.

An adaptive load limiting seat belt retractor particularly adapted for motor vehicle applications. The retractor provides multiple levels of load limiting through the use of a pair of internal torsion bar elements. The torsion bar elements control the tension force on the seat belt webbing during an impact in a manner which provides desirable crash management characteristics. The retractor can be switched between high and low load limiting modes through activation of a pyrotechnic pretensioner. When the pyrotechnic pretensioner is not activated, the retractor provides a low load level characteristic. Pretensioner activation switches the retractor into a high load level operating condition. A high load limiting level is provided when the pretensioner is not activated if the spindle rotation exceeds a limited level in the low load limiting condition. A degressive load limiting feature may be provided to cause load limiting to begin at a higher level than the high load limiting level, and then step down the high load limiting level.

A tubular plasma display (TPD) is composed of an electroded sheet (electroded sheet) attached to an array of plasma tubes. Both the electrode sheet and the plasma tube array contain wire electrodes, which create very electrically conductive lines and the ability to address very large displays. The electroded sheet is composed of a thin flexible polymer substrate with embedded wire sustain electrodes. Each plasma tube is individually sealed and contains a wire address electrode, a hard emissive coating, a color phosphor and a Xenon based plasma gas. Polymer-based color filter coatings may also be applied to the surface of the plasma tubes after they are gas processed and sealed to drastically increase the bright room contrast, brightness, and color purity of the display.

The electroded sheets are formed by embedding wire electrodes into the surface of a polymer substrate and electrically connecting a patterned transparent conductive electrode lines to the wires. A double-sided fiber-based display includes a plasma tube array sandwiched between two electro-optic materials. The electro-optic materials are preferably sandwiched between two fiber arrays. The two fiber arrays contain wire electrodes to set the charge in the plasma tubes and are parallel to each other and orthogonal to the plasma tube array. The fibers can be alternatively coated with a transparent conductive coating, such as a carbon nanotube film, to spread the voltage across the surface of the fiber. The plasma tubes contain wire electrodes to ignite a plasma along its entire length. The tube surfaces that are in contact with the electro-optic materials are preferably thin and flat. The fiber and plasma tube wire electrodes are preferably directly connected to a circuit board which houses electronics to address the display.
