Disclosed is a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A first raised portion having a flat bottom is formed on the inner wall of the cylinder head so that a first flat squish area is formed between the flat bottom of the first raised portion and the flat peripheral portion of the top face of the piston. A second raised portion is formed on the top face of the piston at a position opposite to the first raised portion with respect to the axis of the piston and has a spherical rear wall so that a second spherical shell shape squish area is formed between the inner wall of the cylinder head and the rear wall of the first raised portion. The first squish flow spouted out from the first squish area moves forward along the top face of the piston. The second squish flow spouted from the second squish area moves forward in the upper interior of the combustion chamber in the direction opposite to the spouting direction of the first squish flow. The first and second squish flows cooperate with each other to create a strong swirl motion rotating about a horizontal axis in the combustion chamber.

A self-contained hydraulic lash adjuster having a cup-shaped body and a plunger slidably disposed therein is further provided with a flexible diaphragm secured within a reservoir chamber located in the plunger with one side of said diaphragm being exposed to the atmosphere and the other side being disposed in engagement with the oil supply sealed within the hydraulic lash adjuster. An oil passage is provided in the bottom of the plunger to communicate the reservoir chamber with a pressure chamber defined between the bottom of the plunger and the bottom of the body and a one-way check valve is provided to prevent the return flow of oil through the oil passage to the reservoir. A cup-shaped cover member having apertured side walls is located in the bottom of the plunger over the oil passage to prevent the diaphragm from blocking the oil passage upon deformation of the diaphragm.

An oil-containing hydraulic lifter for lash adjustment comprising relatively movable cylinder and plunger members defining a pressure chamber between their closed ends and a reservoir chamber within the plunger. Means are provided for rapid, one-way flow of the oil from the reservoir to the pressure chamber during outward movement of the plunger and for slow, one-way flow from the pressure to the reservoir chamber during inward movement of the plunger. A flexible, bag-shaped diaphragm extending into the reservoir chamber has its open, upper end sealed liquid tightly to the inner wall of the reservoir for sealing in the oil while expanding and collapsing with reciprocation of the plunger. The reservoir chamber has an increased diameter at that part where the diaphragm undergoes most of its expansion and collapse, thereby spacing the inner wall of the reservoir chamber from the diaphragm by a distance great enough to allow full expansion of the diaphragm in the expanding and collapsing operation thereof. The effect is to greatly increase the volumetric change exhibited by the oil within the reservoir chamber during the reciprocation of the plunger, thereby enhancing lash adjusting performance.

A hydraulic valve lifter is held in the recess of the rocker arm swingably pivoted to the rocker shaft. An oil pressure chamber is formed between the lifter body and the plunger. An oil chamber to supply the oil to the oil pressure chamber is formed between the plunger and the recess. An oil supply path to supply the oil through the oil path of the rocker shaft communicates to the oil chamber. A return path is provided extending from the top of the oil chamber to a clearance between the inside of the rocker arm hole and the outside of the rocker shaft or to a clearance between the outside of the lifter body and the inside of the rocker arm recess. With this arrangement of the device, the air infiltrating the oil chamber can be discharged from the top of the oil chamber via the return path and the clearance, thereby preventing invasion of the air into the oil pressure chamber and ensuring normal functioning of the hydraulic valve lifter.

The belt tensioner has an adjust bolt to be rotated by a worker, a bracket which slidably supports a slider secured to the driven member. The adjust bolt comprises a head portion, a first shaft portion which has a threaded relation with a hole within the bracket, and a second shaft portion which has a thread relation with the slider. Further, a spring is provided between the head portion of the adjust bolt and the bracket to bias the adjust bolt in such a direction as the head portion of the adjust bolt is separate away from the bracket, thereby obtaining an optimum belt tension force.

In an automobile engine exhaust gas cleaning system including an exhaust gas reactor which is supplied with auxiliary air for effecting combustion of unburnt constituents such as CO and HC in the exhaust gas, an air flow control device is provided for controlling the supply of the auxiliary air. The control device includes a first control valve disposed in the auxiliary air supply passage and controlled in response to the engine intake pressure so that it is opened when the engine intake vacuum is above the wide-open throttle vacuum, and a second control valve for controlling the supply of the engine intake vacuum to the first control valve in such a manner that it allows the engine intake vacuum to pass into the first control valve when the vacuum is lower than the value that is produced during deceleration and that it introduces atmospheric pressure to the first control valve when the vacuum increases to the value that is produced during deceleration. A time delay device is provided in the second control valve so that the atmospheric pressure to the first control valve is cut-off and the engine intake vacuum is again introduced into the first control valve after a certain time delay during initial period of engine deceleration.
