In a scum removing apparatus including a suction source, a suction pipe having one end communicating with the suction source and the other free end positioned above the surface of scum to suck the scum and apply water to the sucked scum in the vicinity of the free end, and a scum separator provided at an intermediate portion of the suction pipe, a device for detecting the level of the scum surface relative to the free end of the suction pipe. The detecting device comprises a pair of electrode rods provided on the outer periphery of the free end of the suction pipe and projecting from the pipe end by a suitable length, and means for detecting variations in the electric resistance between the electrode rods. The electrode rod comprises a tube having accommodated therein a slider slidingly projectable from the front end of the tube and slidingly retractable into the tube. The slider is supported by a spring in its retracted position within the tube and connected to means for pushing out the slider from the front end of the tube against the action of the spring.

A telescopic assembly for pipes for conveying powdery to granular materials entrained in an air or like gaseous stream comprises two pipes of different diameters coaxially fitting one within the other and axially slidable relative to each other, a labyrinth packing provided around a front end portion of the inner pipe for preventing leakage of the stream or ingress of the atmosphere through the clearance between the two pipes, and a scraper attached by a plate spring to the retainer ring of the labyrinth packing on the front end of the inner pipe and in pressing contact with the inside peripheral surface of the outer pipe. Rollers carried by the outer pipe engage the outer surface of the inner pipe and aid in maintaining a uniform clearance between the two pipes.

A method of removing slag or like scum from the surface of molten metal by suction. A tubular gaseous stream directed toward the surface of scum is formed, with its interior space communicating with a suction source such as an ejector or vacuum pump. The gaseous stream hampers the inflow of external air into the suction zone surrounded by the stream. On reaching the scum surface, the gaseous stream flows inward along the scum surface and is thereafter drawn toward the suction source, so that the stream acts to blow the scum radially inwardly of the stream and thereafter raises the scum from the surface of molten metal, thus permitting efficient removal of the scum with a relatively low suction. A scum removing apparatus for practicing this method includes a suction source, a suction head communicating with the suction source, and annular nozzle means provided around the suction head for forming a tubular gaseous stream flowing toward the surface of scum.

The water injection comprises a first nozzle for forcing out the water toward the axis of the suction pipe to cause the water to impinge against the sucked scum and to thereby rapidly solidify the scum on cooling, and a second nozzle for injecting the water into the suction pipe along the inner peripheral surface thereof to prevent the adhesion of the scum to the inner surface of the suction pipe. When desired, a water flow channel from the jacket to the first and second nozzles is provided with a shutter for closing the channel in an emergency to prevent the water from falling onto the molten metal.

The cooling water down-flow passage, except the lower end opening, is adapted to be closed up. Therefore, the diameter of generated chips decreases by the fact that the chips are curled while sinking in space formed at a lower position than the virtual extension line L1 of the first bottom surface 211. Consequently, the chip discharge direction is stabilized, thus achieving satisfactory chip discharge performance.

This invention has one object to provide a method of collecting calibration data in radiation tomography apparatus that allows reliable collection of calibration data with a wide detector ring. In order to achieve this purpose, in the method of collecting calibration data in radiation tomography apparatus according to this invention, the number of coincidence events is obtained while the phantom that emits annihilation gamma-ray pairs moves as to pass through an inner hole of the detector ring. Such configuration dose not need the phantom having a width equal or larger than the detector ring, and may realize reliable collection of calibration data. Moreover, it may be considered that annihilation gamma-ray pairs have been emitted in uniform property without depending on positions of the detector ring. As a result, calibration data that is more suitable for removal of a image artifact may be obtained.

A top plate (61) on which an examinee lies is moved through a tunnel of a CT gantry (2) and a PET gantry (3) to execute CT imaging and PET imaging. A PET unit consisting of a plurality (e.g. seven) of PET units (32) has a length of 2 m in the axis direction, the visual field thereof covers the whole body and the whole body can be simultaneously subjected to dynamic PET-imaging. For the maintenance of the PET gantry (3), the diagnosis apparatus is separated at an arbitrary PET unit (32) to be maintained, the apparatus slides on a rail (31) in the axis direction and is separated for maintenance operation. Accordingly, a large space for maintenance is not required and the area for installation is small.
