摘要: A plurality of optical fibers (14-14E) are interconnected by using connectors each comprising an optoelectronic device (13-13E) adapted to be connected to an end of each optical fiber for converting optical signals to electrical signals and for converting electrical signals to optical signals. Each connector has a first contact (12-12E) having a cylindrical plug end and a cylindrical socket end located on a common axis and a transverse conductor (21) extending transversely to the axis (20) from the first contact and connected to the optoelectronic device of the connector. The plug end of each contact is adapted to fit snugly within the socket end of another first contact, whereby all of the contacts may be connected and arranged along the common axis. Each of the contacts is free to rotate with respect to other contacts to which it is connected; this permits the various optical fibers to extend in different radial directions from the axis. In a preferred embodiment, each connector further comprises second (23) and third (24) hollow cylindrical contacts surrounding the first contact (22). Hollow cylindrical insulators ( 26, 27) separate and insulate the first, second and third contacts, and appropriate slots permit transverse conductors (29, 31, 32) of the contacts to be connected to the optoelectronic devices (41). In this manner, each connector interconnects electrical ground and power lines, as well as the optical signal lines of the various optical fiber cables (40).

摘要: Method for expanding tubular members, such as U-shaped heat transfer tubes having ends thereof located in the confined space adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped lower plenum of a typical nuclear steam generator. The apparatus includes an elongate mandrel having a flow channel therethrough in communication with a resilient tubular bladder surrounding the mandrel. The bladder is flexible about its longitudinal axis due to the ribbed construction of the wall thereof. The mandrel includes a plurality of segments, adjacent ones of the segments interconnected by a ball-and-socket joint therebetween, so that the segments swivel about respective ones of the ball-and-socket joints. Thus, the mandrel and the expandable bladder connected thereto are flexible rather than rigid in order to be easily inserted into the tube ends located adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped plenum and in order to easily traverse the upper U-bend portion of the tube.

摘要: System and method for in situ testing of the leak-tightness of a tubular member, which tubular member may be a nuclear steam generator heat transfer tube. The system includes a mandrel insertable into the tube, the mandrel having a pair of spaced-apart expandable bladders surrounding the mandrel. A first channel extends through the mandrel and is in communication with the bladders. A fluid supply circuit is in fluid communication with the first channel for supplying pressurized liquid to the bladders so that the bladders radially expand into sealing engagement with the inner diameter of the tube. As the bladders expand into sealing engagement with the tube, a sealed annular chamber is defined therebetween bounded by the bladders and the inner diameter of the tube. A second channel also extends through the mandrel, the second channel being in fluid communication with the fluid supply circuit at one end thereof and in communication with the chamber at the other and thereof in order to pressurize the chamber with the liquid. A controller is connected to the fluid supply circuit for measuring the flow rate of the liquid flowing through the fluid supply circuit to the chamber. Any crack in the tube wall adjacent the chamber will allow the liquid to escape therefrom at a characteristic flow rate corresponding to the size of the crack. However, the fluid supply circuit maintains the liquid pressure in the chamber so that the pressure and thus the liquid inventory in the chamber remains constant as the liquid leaks through the crack. The controller, which is connected to the flow meter, measures the flow rate and pressure of the liquid flowing through the fluid supply circuit. In view of the fact that the liquid (i.e., water) is incompressible, the flow rate through the crack and the pressure in the chamber are provided by measuring the flow rate and pressure of the liquid flowing through the fluid supply circuit.

摘要: A multiple stage compression system, as used in refrigeration apparatus, includes an injection assembly for flash gas resulting from expansion of high-pressure liquid refrigerant. The vapor fraction of the expanded mixture of vapor and liquid is injected by the injection assembly into a compression chamber therefor, and the repressurized vapor fraction mixed with the output of a high pressure compression stage to provide the high-pressure refrigerant. The assembly is removably attached to the compressor, and includes valved passages for the flash gas to and from the compression chamber therefor. The flash gas compression chamber is integrally formed within a piston of the high pressure compression stage for the refrigerant.
