摘要: A compression release engine brake assembly adapted for use with an internal combustion engine, and an exhaust valve (29) operable to open in a normal exhaust lift event (FIG. 9) and in a brake lift event (FIG. 15). The engine includes an exhaust valve actuating mechanism (23,31,37) for imparting reciprocal movement to said exhaust valve (29) in response to rotation of a cam shaft (11) including a cam profile (13), a normal lift portion (17) and a brake lift portion (19). The assembly includes a lost motion device (75) moveable between a normal lost motion condition (FIG. 4) and an actuated condition (FIG. 14) in response to movement of an input member (91). An energy storage spring (117) is operable, after being compressed to an energy storage condition (FIG. 12) to be able to bias the input member (91) toward a second position, effecting the actuated condition of the lost motion device (75). A latching mechanism (99,103-113,129,131) is operable to first displace the energy storage spring (117) to a compressed condition, and then release it just before the cam follower (21) traverses the brake lift portion (19), in response to the pivotal movement of the rocker arm assembly (23) which comprises part of the exhaust valve actuating mechanism.

摘要: A valve deactivator assembly (13) for an internal combustion engine, the assembly including a drive rocker arm (39) receiving cyclical motion from an engine push rod (23), and a driven rocker arm (41) which engages the engine poppet valve (29). The rocker arms are biased by a lost motion spring (49) to a position in which the rocker arms align to define a latching chamber (63), having a moveable latch member (65) disposed therein and biased by a spring (67) toward a latched position (FIG. 1). An electromagnetic actuator assembly (81) is disposed adjacent the rocker arms (39,41) and in response to an input signal (88), exerts a force on an actuation shaft (93) and an actuation beam (97) to move the latch member (65) toward its unlatched position (FIG. 3). The invention provides an effective, compact valve deactivator which can change quickly between the latched and unlatched conditions.

摘要: A hydraulic belt tensioner operating on pressurized lubricating oil in an internal combustion engine. The tensioner includes a ratchet mechanism which locks the output member of the tensioner in a fixed position when the engine is not operating and which is disengaged when the engine is operating and the lubricating oil is pressurized. A seal is provided to prevent oil from escaping from the unit. The invention further includes slots formed in a plunger element of the tensioner which are effective to dissipate air which tends to become entrapped under the plunger when the engine is initially started.

摘要: The invention is a valve deactivator assembly (15) for use in connection with a valve train of an internal combustion engine. In application, a pre-selected number of the engine cylinders would each be equipped with a deactivator connected to its intake engine valve. Upon driver selection or predetermined road conditions, sufficient lost motion would be introduced into the valve train so that the valve would remain closed and the cylinder deactivated as the engine is in operation. The deactivator has in its inner body (19) a latch assembly that is in a latched condition for normal operation of the valve train. When it is desired to retain the valve in the closed position and deactivate a cylinder, the latch assembly is caused to be moved to the unlatched condition by increase in the pressure of the engine oil. When the latch assembly is unlatched, significant lost motion is introduced into the valve train causing the valve to remain closed and the cylinder is deactivated.

摘要: A valve control system for an internal combustion engine including a poppet valve (21) and high lift (15) and low lilt (31) cam lobes. A latchable rocker arm includes an outer rocker arm (33) and an inner rocker arm (35), and a slider mechanism (37) which is biased by a spring (67) to the high lilt mode (FIG. 1). An actuator assembly (27) includes and arm (103) biased by a spring (101) into engagement with the slider (37), biasing the slider toward the unlatched (low lift) mode (FIG. 2 ). The actuator (27) includes an electromagnetic coil (83) which moves an armature (87) into engagement with the arm (103), biasing the arm in opposition to the force of the actuator spring (101), but aided initially by the force of the slider spring (67).

摘要: A valve deactivator assembly (43) for an internal combustion engine. The deactivator assembly (43) is of the type having a two-stage latchable means (49) movable between a latched (FIG. 3) position, effecting normal valve opening and closing, and an unlatched (FIG. 4) position, in which valve opening and closing may either be reduced or eliminated. The deactivator assembly (43) includes a rotatable latch member (69) which is rotated between the latched and unlatched positions by a electromagnetic actuator (51), including a rotatable armature (75) which is fixed to rotate with the latch member (69). With the arrangement of the invention, having no linkage, and very little inertia, movement between the latched and unlatched positions can occur during a single revolution of the engine cam shaft.

摘要: A rocker arm assembly includes first and second rocker arms defining a pivot location. The first rocker arm includes, toward a first axial end thereof adjacent the pivot location, a fulcrum surface and, toward a second axial end thereof, a latch assembly including a latch member moveable between latched and unlatched conditions relative to a latch surface defined by an adjacent portion of the second rocker arm. The latch assembly further including a spring biasing the latch member toward one of the latched and unlatched conditions, and a pressure chamber operable to bias the latch member toward the other of the latched and unlatched conditions. The first rocker arm further includes a fluid passage having a first end in open fluid communication with the fulcrum surface and a second end in open fluid communication with the pressure chamber of the latch assembly.

摘要: A deactivating rocker arm for use with a cam having at least one no-lift safety lobe is provided. Safety lobe contacting surfaces on the rocker arm are configured for contact with safety lobes during abnormal operation of the rocker arm. When the rocker arm is deactivated, the safety lobe contacting surfaces may come into contact with safety lobes when excessive pump-up of a lash adjuster brings the rocker arm undesirably close to the rotating cam. This contact limits the range of motion of the rocker arm during certain instances of abnormal operation, promoting more effective transition between deactivated and activated states and preventing damaging contact between the rocker arm and the cam lobe.

摘要: A valve deactivation assembly (21) comprises part of the valve gear train for an internal combustion engine, and is disposed in a bore (55) defined by the A engine block (11B). The assembly (21) includes a latching mechanism (67) shiftable, in response to control fluid pressure, between latched and unlatched conditions. The assembly (21) includes an outer body member (53), having an outer cylindrical surface (53S), reciprocable within said the bore (55), the outer body member including a lower terminal portion (55L). The outer body member defines an annular sealing groove (75) which remains aligned within the bore (55), between the lower terminal portion (55L) and a passage (72) communicating control fluid pressure the latching mechanism (67), as the outer body member reciprocates. There is also a fluid passage (77) disposed to communicate a source (79) of low pressure to the annular groove (75), to thereby form a barrier to block the migration of air to the control pressure passage (72).
