    摘要: A control strategy for mitigation of the effect of increased engine back-pressure on fuel injectors (22) when an engine retarder is activated to slow the engine (10) of a motor vehicle. The strategy attenuates injection control pressure ICP of hydraulic fluid for the fuel injectors to a defined dwell pressure ICP_VRE_DWL, and once that dwell pressure has been attained, keeps the injection control pressure from exceeding it for the length of a dwell time ICP_DWL_TM. Upon elapse of the dwell time, the injection control pressure gradually increases above the dwell pressure using a pressure versus time map (54). When engine operating conditions call for greater injection control pressure while the retarder is activated, the strategy provides for greater injection control pressure using a pressure versus speed map (42).

If the injector tip temperatures are below the pre-determined temperature, then the electronic control module commands performance of dual event engine braking. If the injector tip temperatures are at or above the pre-determined temperatures, then the electronic control module commands the performance of single event engine braking. Such a strategy can achieve higher overall engine braking horsepower without risking the potential catastrophic dangers associated with injector tip overheating.

    摘要: An automotive internal engine 8 is provided which includes an engine controller 70 cognizant of a desired deceleration condition for a vehicle and a combustion chamber 12 with a reciprocating piston 15 mounted therein. The piston has a top dead center and a bottom dead center position. A cam driven exhaust valve 14 is provided which can be selectively disabled to a closed position to deactivate the combustion chamber 12 in response to a signal given by the engine controller 70. A variable phase cam driven intake poppet valve 16 responsive to a signal given by the engine controller 70 is provided to selectively set the opening and closing operation of the intake poppet valve 16 to be generally symmetrical about one of the center positions during the first combustion chamber 12 deactivation during vehicle deceleration.

    摘要: An engine exhaust braking method and apparatus. The method includes injecting a predetermined amount of fuel per stroke into an engine cylinder during engine braking, wherein the predetermined amount of fuel cools the fuel injector nozzle, thereby allowing the engine braking to be performed without damage to the fuel injector nozzle due to excessive heat. The apparatus includes a fuel injector having a nozzle and capable of injecting a predetermined amount of fuel into an engine, and a processor connected to the fuel injector, with the processor monitoring engine operation and capable of causing the fuel injector to inject the predetermined amount of fuel into the engine, wherein a predetermined amount of fuel is injected into the engine to cool the fuel injector nozzle, thereby allowing the exhaust braking to be performed without damaging the fuel injector nozzle due to excessive heat.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine includes a plurality of cylinders, a plurality of fuel injectors, compression brake units operatively associated the cylinders, an engine speed sensor and an engine control unit (ECU) for controlling the fuel injectors and the compression brake unit as a function of at least sensed engine speed. A method of measuring performance of the engine includes running the engine at a specified speed under no load, setting to zero a rate of fuel flow delivered by a selected one of the fuel injectors associated with one of the cylinders associated with the compression brake unit, increasing by a first amount a rate of fuel flow delivered by the other of the fuel injectors so that the engine runs at the specified engine speed, activating the compression brake unit associated with the selected fuel injector so that the cylinder associated therewith absorbs power, and again increasing by a second amount a rate of fuel flow delivered by the other of the fuel injectors so that the engine runs at the specified engine speed. This second amount of fuel flow rate increase thereby represents a performance characteristic of the engine.

    摘要: An engine compression braking system includes an exhaust rocker arm pivotally supported on rocker shaft. One end of the rocker arm carries a roller which engages a camshaft which has a lost motion bump formed thereon. The other end of the rocker arm engages an exhaust valve stem assembly. A part of the rocker shaft engages a pressure operated piston. Extension of the piston moves the rocker shaft transversely to its axis, so that the rocker arm can selectively react to or ignore the lost motion portion bump. A pressure control system includes a solenoid operated valve controlled by an operator controlled switch, so that the piston selectively applies a light force or a very high force to the rocker arm rocker shaft, thus controlling the pivot point of the rocker arm.

    摘要: In internal combustion engines that use hydraulic-fluid actuated fuel injectors, enhanced engine compression braking can be realized with simplified hydraulic control systems, by using fuel injector hydraulic fluid to open exhaust valves at or near the top of a compression stroke. Opening the exhaust valves at the top of a compression stroke wastes compressed gas to the atmosphere providing enhanced efficiency of engine compression braking. Using existing fuel injector high pressure fluid or engine oil to actuate a slave piston and thereby actuate the exhaust valve obviates the need for a separate, dedicated high-pressure oil delivery system for engine compression braking purposes.
