    Abstract: An axial cam with a plurality of followers mounted within its diameter drives the followers in both axial directions. The followers operatively actuate valves such as those of an internal combustion engine. The cam can be driven about its exterior perimeter, providing an axially compact embodiment. The phasing of select followers can be established by modifying the azimuth positions of those followers with the cam in operation. By providing the cam with a symmetric actuating profile its followers can be linked to alternately actuate same-function valves in different engine cylinders.

    Abstract: A kinetically unyielding, statically compliant (KUSC) positive return valve action. In one embodiment, a guide is pivotally mounted and rotationally abuts a limiting bench. A pin mounted slidably on the guide is linked to a poppet valve, a driver positioning the pin along the guide. With the valve seated and the driver overtraveled a deflection opens up between the guide and the limiting bench that resolves the overtravel, which deflection is opposed by a forcing spring. As the valve is initially lifted, valve-lift kinetic force is buttressed against the guide mount and the limiting bench, neither of which yields. With increasing lift the pin position passes the guide mount axis to be cantilevered on the guide at maximal valve lift against valve-return kinetic force: this also is unyieldingly buttressed. The action is adjusted by positioning the limiting bench either manually or by hydraulic lash adjuster.

    Abstract: A driver that reciprocates has its reciprocation divided into a non-actuating portion and an actuating portion. The driver in one embodiment positions a carrier that has two pins, each pin being slidably mounted in its slot on a housing. One of the pins is an output pin that may be linked to operatively position a valve of an internal combustion engine. The two slots are configured such that each pin, during its motion range, does effect a capture of the other pin such that the captured pin is generally stationary. When the output pin is captured, the driver reciprocation causes the non-output pin to perform a lost-motion traverse of its slot. When the non-output pin is captured, the driver reciprocation actuates the output pin. A linked pair of such embodiments driven by a single driver can thus alternately actuate two valves.
