摘要： A breather filter for a hard disk drive is attached to a hole provided in the cover of the disk drive. The breather filter has a first sheet that forms a diffusing tube at a position corresponding to the hole provided in the cover of the disk drive. The filter also has a second sheet forming an opening at a position corresponding to the diffusing tube of the first sheet. A third sheet of the filter has an adsorbent layer at a position corresponding to the opening in the second sheet. Finally, a fourth sheet, including a filter layer, covers the adsorbent layer of the third sheet and is stacked with each of the sheets.

The head-slider includes a trailing edge on an outflow side of the air-stream, and a disk-facing surface that is configured to face the recording surface of the magnetic-recording disk. A low-surface-energy film is disposed on a portion of a trailing-edge side of the head-slider that is in contact with a boundary between the trailing edge and the disk-facing surface. The low-surface-energy film has a lower surface energy than other portions of the trailing-edge side where the low-surface-energy film is not disposed.

The method includes reading a preliminarily written data string for clearance measurement on a disk to obtain a first measured value corresponding to a clearance, and writing a new data string for deterioration check onto the disk and reading the data string for deterioration check to obtain a second measured value corresponding to the clearance. The method also includes determining a deterioration of the data string for clearance measurement from a difference between the first measured value and the second measured value, measuring a clearance change using the data string for clearance measurement by a normal operation if the determination is that the data string for clearance measurement has not deteriorated, and measuring a clearance change by an operation different operation if the determination is that the data string for clearance measurement has deteriorated.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention relate to retracting a magnetic head of a disk drive device to a retract position in accordance with a fall state, and to suppressing the performance degradation due to erroneous fall determinations as well as occurrence of damage by a head-disk crash. According to one embodiment of the present invention, in a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), a servo controller moves a head slider to a cylinder at the side of a ramp at a predetermined timing that a fall determiner determines that it is falling and an unload controller starts an unload process. This shortens the time between determination by the fall determiner that it is falling to retraction of the head slider to the retract position. Furthermore, it prevents increase of the erroneous determinations by relaxing the fall determination condition for safety. Also, it shortens the time that the head slider returns to the initial position before the seek in case that it is not determined that it is falling.

摘要： Embodiments of the invention provide a rotating disk storage device including a connection structure between an FPC and a printed board and providing allowance for dimensional tolerances. In one embodiment, the rotating disk storage device includes a disk enclosure, an FPC supporting portion, and a flexible printed circuit board assembly provided with an FPC terminal area that extends along a front surface of the FPC supporting portion and further beyond an end portion of the FPC supporting portion. When the printed board is mounted on the disk enclosure, a connector terminal contacts and gives pressure to an FPC terminal formed in the FPC terminal area. This causes the FPC terminal area to flex in the direction of an arrow.
