In a data display radio pager, light emitting diodes (LEDs) for alerting the user of the pager to an incoming call are disposed in a backlight together with LEDs for backlighting a liquid crystal display (LCD) for message display. The alert LEDs effect an alert via the LCD and flash in a striking color different from the color of light to issue from the backlight LEDs. The radio pager is miniature despite that the LCD and alert LEDs are arranged on the front of the casing of the pager.

A data display pager capable of automatically protecting a particular message over a limited period of time. The receiver stores a message signal in a message signal storage area included in a controller thereof. When the pager detects protection information made up of a protection time signal indicative of a protection period and a set of particular marks, it protects the message signal over the protection time. The message signal is protected in either of two modes which are discriminated from each other on the basis of the number of or type of marks. During the protection time, the stored message is displayed in a first mode wherein a message without the protection information appears or in a second mode wherein the entire message appears, depending on the above-mentioned protection mode. On the expiration of the protection time, the stored message signal has, in a first protection mode, the protection information thereof deleted or has, in a second protection mode, only the particular marks thereof deleted.

In a radio display pager, each character of a received multi-character message is checked for error. A first message arrival or a first receive message is stored in a temporary memory and thereafter rewritten into one of main memories when the next message or second message arrival is received. The temporary memory stores the most recent message arrival and the main memories store a plurality of like messages, according to their successive order of earlier arrivals. Each of the messages in both memories contain both error-free and error-containing characters. The characters stored in the temporary memory respectively correspond in position to the characters stored in each of the main memories. A comparison is made between each error-free character in the temporary memory and each of the positionally corresponding error-free characters in one of the main memories in order to detect a match and mismatch. If a mismatch is detected, all characters of each main memory are transferred to an adjacent main memory in order to vacate a storage area. Then, all characters in the temporary memory are transferred to the vacated area for display. If a match is detected, it is counted for all characters of the received message. If the count is smaller than a threshold value, all characters of each main memory are transferred to an adjacent main memory in order to vacate a storage area. All characters in the temporary memory are transferred to that vacated area for display. If the count of the matches is greater than the threshold value, all the error-free characters in the temporary memory are transferred to one of the main memories for display.

In a radio receiver a PLL oscillator generates a phase locked oscillation signal with a controllable frequency and a frequency multiplier multiplies the controllable frequency with a controllable factor into a local oscillation frequency to provide a local oscillation signal for mixing into an IF signal with a radio signal reaching the receiver, the IF signal is monitored to raise the controllable frequency and to reduce the controllable factor when a spurious signal coexists with the radio signal. This coexistence is detected by monitoring a level difference between the IF signal and an output signal of an IF filter. Preferably, the oscillator comprises in a PLL two VCO's for generating phase locked oscillation signals of higher and lower oscillation frequencies, such as 260 and 65 MHz, and a controllable prescaler supplied with high and low voltage signals when the VCO's are put in operation at the higher and the lower oscillation frequencies. Concurrently, the controllable factor is controlled to factors of unity and four.

A personal radio paging receiver includes a radio section, a control section, a DC/DC converter, and a secondary battery. The radio section receives/demodulates an external radio signal and outputs a POCSAG signal. The control section divides the POCSAG signal into a first sync signal portion and a second batch signal portion, and outputs a control signal during a period of the first portion. The DC/DC converter operates for only a period during which the control signal is received. The secondary battery supplies power to the control section in synchronism with the second portion. The DC/DC converter is supplied to charge the second battery.

In a paging receiver with an individual paging number and at least one common paging number, there is provided memory means including individual memory means including individual memory areas capable of storing at least one message signal following the individual number and specific memory areas storing message signals following the common paging number. The receiver can protect individual address information and can efficiently utilize the memory areas even when the user does not use all common addresses.

A radio selective calling receiver having at least two, i.e., a first and a second, local oscillators constituted by respective synthesizers. The oscillation frequencies of the local oscillator are controlled by the apparatus including a frequency calculator for executing frequency calculations according to the received call signal frequency and the oscillation frequencies of the first and second local oscillators so that harmonics of either one of the oscillation frequencies are not interference frequencies to the other oscillation frequency or the received signal frequency.

Data contained in second and subsequent transmissions is superimposed on the basic data first transmitted to a pocket bell type portable pager having a liquid crystal display. A first mode superimposes all of the data in order of receipt while a second mode stores the first received data and superimposes only most recently received thereon. A ROM is provided which contains maps and the like type of predetermined image data. Locations, times and messages can be superimposed in either of the two modes on the maps etc.

Portable radio equipment which is thin enough to enhance portability and, yet, has a sufficiently high antenna gain. The equipment has an antenna which is made up of a pair of metal plates located face-to-face, and a short-circuiting member for short-circuiting the metal plates. A circuit board loaded with radio circuitry is interposed between two metal plates with the radio circuitry being connected to the antenna. A capacitor is connected between the metal plates to lower the resonance frequency of the antenna, as needed. A circular cell for powering the equipment is located in a cell receiving portion near the short-circuiting member.

A radio portable remote terminal device which has two antennas, and in which an antenna not in use contributes to the performance of the antenna presently in use. An external antenna has an external antenna element which is capable of being extended from an enclosure or being retracted and contained in the enclosure reciprocally. An internal antenna has a ground section, a detector for detecting whether the external antenna element is extended from the enclosure or is retracted in the enclosure. A switching circuit switches a connection between a radio section circuit and the external antenna or the internal antenna reciprocally. A printed circuit board mounts the external antenna with the external antenna element contained in the enclosure and the internal antenna measures on opposite sides thereof. When the external antenna element is retracted into the enclosure, a radio section circuit on the printed circuit board is disconnected from the external antenna and connected to the internal antenna. When the external antenna element is extended from the enclosure, the radio section circuit on the printed circuit board is disconnected from the internal antenna and connected to the external antenna.
