Disclosed is a thermal recording medium having a heat-transferable coloring agent layer, wherein said coloring agent layer contains a heat fusible substance which has at least one segment represented by the following formula [I]: ##STR1## wherein R is a monovalent group or atom. The thermal recording medium of the present invention provides a coated surface of a coloring agent layer which is homogeneous and smooth, thereby giving a dye transferred image on a recording sheet such as plain paper which is free from irregularity and also high in transfer efficiency and resolving power.

A thermal transfer recording medium having a support and two coloring agent layers provided on the same side thereof, in which the first coloring agent layer is a layer containing a resin and a coloring agent coated on the support and the second layer is a layer containing a heat-fusible material and a coloring agent coated on the first layer, and the respective coloring agents in the two layers have isochromatic color tone. A thermal head for transferring heat-sensitive ink material coated on an ink support onto a recording sheet comprises heating elements capable of coming in pressure contact with the support for heating a transfer part of the ink support. A pressing protrusion then presses the heated transfer part of the ink support onto the recording sheet with a pressing force larger than that exerted during the pressure contact with the heating elements. A base plate holds the heating elements and the pressing protrusion such that the pressing protrusion is disposed on the base plate spaced apart from the heating elements. The pressing protrusion protrudes higher from the base plate than does the heating elements.
