In an image scanner, multiple exposures are used for each scan line, and only part of the pixels for each scan line are used for each exposure. For example, with two exposures, half the pixels may be used for the first exposure, and half for the second exposure. For each exposure, half of the charges are shifted out rapidly and discarded, without waiting for the A/D conversion time. As a result, for each exposure, the time required to empty the charge shift register is greatly reduced, reducing the thermal noise for all pixels.

A multiple resolution sensing apparatus comprises first and second arrays of photosensor elements and an image processing system. The first array exhibits a first signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and a first input sampling rate (ISR). The first array also is operative to generate color information, corresponding to an image, that comprises at least one of red, green and blue information. The second array exhibits a second S/N ratio lower than the first S/N ratio and a second ISR higher than the first ISR. The second array is operative to generate luminance information corresponding to the image. The image processing system is communicatively coupled to the first array and the second array and is operative to receive the color information from the first array and the luminace information from the second array. The image procesing system also is operative to generate pixel data corresponding to the image, with the pixel data comprising the color information from the first array and the luminance information from the second array. A controller controls selection of rows of photosensors residing in a photosensor array having at least one row of photosensors with a first sensor size, and at least one row of photosensors with a second sensor size. In a first example embodiment, the controller may select each sensor in a double row of sensors for white light having a smaller area than the sensors in other rows. For the first embodiment, the native input sampling rate for luminance is greater than the native input sampling rate for color information. In a second example embodiment, for every band of wavelengths being sensed, the controller selects one of two rows of sensors, with one row having relatively small sensor areas and the other row having relatively large sensor areas. In the second example embodiment, the rows with relatively small sensor areas are used for high native input sampling rates, and the rows with relatively large sensor areas are used for high color accuracy.
