    摘要: Sonochemistry permits extremely rapid cooling from the melt which is necessary for forming amorphous metals. Sonochemistry also functions at an extremely small scale to produce nanophase particles. If magnetic, these particles are valuable for magnetic recording media, manufacture of permanent magnets, and other uses. The nanophase particles agglomerate, however, which limits their utility for these magnetic applications. To keep the particles isolated, we extract the particles from the n-alkane reaction solvent in a polar solvent and cast the extracted particles with a polymer, such as polyvinylpyrrolidone.

    摘要: Methods of forming a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) are provided. The methods may be suitable for aircraft exterior applications. A particular method includes mixing together an un-crosslinked acrylic adhesive, a solvent, and a polyisocyanate crosslinker to form a mixture. The method also includes driving off a portion of the solvent. The method further includes reacting the polyisocyanate crosslinker with the un-crosslinked acrylic adhesive. A resultant crosslinked adhesive exhibits a peel strength in a range between around 2 pounds per square inch and around 8 pounds per square inch at temperatures in a range between around 180 degrees Fahrenheit and around 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

    摘要: A pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) suitable for aircraft exterior applications formed by reacting a cross-linker with an un-crosslinked adhesive can resist many aircraft fluids and can maintain a bond to a protective barrier film of an appliqué at low and high temperatures. An exemplary PSA includes at least a first release liner and a crosslinked adhesive releasably bonded thereto. The crosslinked adhesive suitably is formed by reacting a polyisocyanate crosslinker with an un-crosslinked acrylic adhesive. The PSA can exhibit a peel strength between around 2-8 psi at temperatures between around 180-250 degrees Fahrenheit. In an exemplary method to provide a PSA, an un-crosslinked acrylic adhesive, a solvent, and a polyisocyanate crosslinker are mixed together. The mixture is reacted on a release liner. A portion of the solvent is driven off, and the polyisocyanate crosslinker is reacted with itself and with reactive groups remaining on the un-crosslinked acrylic adhesive.

    摘要: A surface treatment, especially for titanium and aluminum alloys, forms a pigmented sol-gel film covalently bonded on the metal surface to produce desired color, gloss, reflectivity, electrical conductivity, emissivity, or a combination thereof usable over a wide temperature range. The coating retains its characteristics and impact resistance following exposures to temperatures at least in the range from −321° F. to 750° F. An aqueous sol containing an alkoxyzirconium and an organosilane with an organic acid catalyst and zirconium stabilizer is applied to etched or grit blasted substrates by dipping, spraying, or drenching, to produce bonds in a single application comparable in strength and performance to standard anodize controls. Parameters affecting performance include the sol composition, the Si/Zr ratio, the ratio of sol ingredients, the concentration of the sol, the carrier solvent, solution age, catalysts, surface pretreatment, application method, curing process, and primer used. The sol-gel coating may be graded in its ceramic character by adjusting the organosilane component between TEOS and silanes that have more distinctive organic character by virtue of organic ligands attached to the silicon.
