The communication network is organized into a plurality of communication layers, including a physical layer. A first band is referred to as a “transmission” band, and a second band is referred to as a “signaling” band. A station accesses the channel for transmitting data of a stream after using a counter to decrement a backoff value. The method includes: receiving backoff counts sent successively over the signaling channel by the various stations relating to their various streams; comparing the backoff counts with one another in order to detect identical values; and in the event of there being identical values between a plurality of stations, determining at least one new backoff count value that is different from all the others.
