A laser includes a resonator terminated by first and second mirrors and including a gain medium providing fundamental radiation. A first optically-nonlinear element is located in the resonator. The first optically-nonlinear element is cooperatively arranged with the first mirror to provide passive modelocking of the fundamental radiation by sequentially converting a first portion of the circulating fundamental radiation to second-harmonic radiation and reconverting a first portion of the second-harmonic radiation to fundamental radiation. A second optically-nonlinear element is arranged to convert a second portion of the second-harmonic radiation to either third-harmonic radiation or fourth-harmonic radiation.

A method and apparatus for printing Chinese or other ideographic characters. An operator enters upon a keyboard a sequence of sub-structures composing the character to be printed. The particular set of sub-structures disclosed enables an operator to type in the sub-structures in a manner substantially identical with the way in which the words would be written, thus minimizing special training necessary for the operation of the system. Apparatus is disclosed for processing signals from the keyboard to identify and print in dot-matrix form the proper Chinese characters.

An optical relay is located between the laser resonator and the amplifier gain rod. When the oscillator and amplifier gain media are equally optically pumped, the magnification and the distances from the optical relay to the resonator and the amplifier gain rod can be selected such that amplifier efficiency is maximized, independent of optical pump power, even if the diameters of the oscillator and amplifier gain rods are different.

An optical modulator is provided to control the intensity of a transmitted or reflected light. In a transmission mode, a separator splits arbitrarily polarized light into two polarization rays and one is made to travel a separate path from the other. A recombiner causes the two rays to recombine at an output unless an electro-optic phase retarder changes the polarization of the two rays, in which case, both of them miss the output by an amount which is a function of the voltage on the retarder. A normally-off version with low polarization mode dispersion is obtained by changing the orientation of the recombiner. A normally-on version with low polarization mode dispersion is obtained with a passive polarization direction rotator. Similar results can be obtained in a reflection mode where the input and output are on the same side of the modulator. Versions using a GRIN lens are particularly suited to modulation of light out of and back into fiber-optic cables. The device can be operated as a variable optical attenuator, an optical switch, or a high speed modulator and is insensitive to polarization of the input light. A preferred material for the phase retarder is a hot-pressed ceramic lead lanthanum zirconate titanate composition.
