Abstract: An illumination system for a non-emissive display panel is provided. The illumination system includes a light source array including a plurality of individually addressable illumination units, an illumination unit being configured to emit a first light beam having a first solid angle. The illumination system also includes a concentrator array coupled with the light source array and including a plurality of concentrators, a concentrator being configured to condition the first light beam into a second light beam associated with a second solid angle that is smaller than the first solid angle, the second light beam providing a substantially uniform illumination at an exit aperture of the concentrator. The illumination system also includes an imaging assembly including one or more optical elements configured to image the substantially uniform illumination at the exit aperture of the concentrator onto the non-emissive display panel.

Abstract: A device includes an array of light sources configured to emit light beams, and a metasurface including a plurality of nanostructures and configured to receive and deflect the light beams emitted by the array of light sources. The metasurface includes a plurality of regions. Nanostructures in different regions of the plurality of regions are configured to deflect center light rays (with peak intensity) of the light beams into different directions towards a target, such as display optics of a near-eye display. In some embodiments, nanostructures in each region of the plurality of regions are configured to deflect center light rays of light beams of two or more different colors into a same direction or similar directions towards the target.

Abstract: Various embodiments set forth light emission display elements, and display devices that include such display elements. In some embodiments, a display element includes an electroluminescent light source and a pair of reflective elements that form a resonant cavity for a particular range of wavelengths and/or a particular polarization of light. One or both of the reflective elements can include meta-reflectors, such as anisotropic meta-reflectors or chiral meta-reflectors. An optional waveplate can be placed between the reflective elements to adjust the polarization state of light emitted by the display element.

Abstract: A display assembly includes a light source, a spatial light modulator (SLM) and a grating. The light source is configured to emit illumination light, the SLM is configured to receive the illumination light and reflect at least a portion of the illumination light. The grating is positioned to redirect the illumination light output from the light source toward the SLM, receive at least a portion of the reflected light from the SLM, redirect first light having a first polarization toward the light source, and transmit through the grating second light having a second polarization that is orthogonal to the first polarization. Also disclosed are operations performed by the display assembly.
