摘要: A spatial light modulator (SLM) module and methods of designing, manufacturing and using the same are provided. In one embodiment, the SLM module comprises a diffractive, diffractive SLM formed on a substrate, the SLM including a plurality of pixels each including a plurality of electrostatically deflectable actuators, and a driver including a number of drive channels each coupled to one of the plurality of electrostatically deflectable actuators. Each of the drive channels include at least one internal digital-to-analog converter (DAC) integrally formed on the same substrate as the SLM. In one embodiment, the DAC is a multi-slope charge integrating DAC. In other embodiments, the driver includes circuitry to test each of the drive channels, and a spare drive channel that can be switched in to replace a defective drive channel.

摘要: According to one embodiment, a method is disclosed for adjusting a display device. The device includes light sources, light guides, light extraction units, and a controller. The light guides have an incident portion, one other end portion, and a side surface. The light extraction units form pixels. The controller supplies an electrical signal to the light extraction units to form a light-extracting state and a non light-extracting state. The method can include light intensity acquisition processing, change amount calculation processing, and light intensity modification processing. The acquisition processing acquires first and second intensities of the light. The calculation processing calculates a ratio of a difference between the first and second intensities to a difference between a first previous intensity in the light-extracting state and a second previous intensity in the non light-extracting state. The modification processing reduces the intensity of the light in the light-extracting state.

摘要: In one embodiment, in an optical device, a bar-shaped optical waveguide has either a polygonal or circular cross-sectional shape. A light entry portion is formed in a circumferential area of a first-end surface of the optical waveguide. The light entry portion includes a sloping surface having a normal vector containing a component in a circumferential direction of the first-end surface. An incident light beam travels towards a second-end surface of the optical waveguide while repeating total reflections on a side surface of the optical waveguide. The incident light beam travels without passing through a central portion in a cross section of the optical waveguide. A light exit portion is formed in the side surface of the optical waveguide. The light exit portion is configured to let the light beam in the optical waveguide out of the optical waveguide.

摘要: An addressing mechanism for charging and discharging quasi-capacitive elements in an X-Y matrix. The addressing mechanism may be configured to toggle a resistor-capacitor (RC) time constant between large and small values such as by opening or closing a circuit path to a low impedance resistor disposed in parallel with a higher impedance in-line resistor. When this occurs, elements in the X-Y matrix can be addressed and controlled. The X-Y matrix may be comprised of multiple “rows” and “columns” of conductors where crosstalk may occur along the columns and rows. Crosstalk may be curtailed by using either hysteresis management or global control of the row's impedance along its entire length. The resulting control obviates the need for active devices at each matrix element to perform the switching functions.

摘要: A system and method for displaying video images in response to each frame of field-sequential video signals. The system comprises a backlight comprising first, second and third primary color light sources. The backlight is operable to emit light for at most 5.67 milliseconds of each frame (on-time), and to emit no light during the remainder of each frame (off-time). During a portion of the on-time, at least two of the primary color light sources are on simultaneously. For another portion of the on-time, the primary color light sources are on sequentially.

摘要: This invention is a device for displaying images that appear to be three-dimensional, with binocular disparity and motion parallax, for multiple viewers in different viewing locations. This device includes an array of display elements wherein at least one of these display elements includes: one or more light-emitting members; and two or more rotating concentric light guides whose rotation guides the directions of the light rays from the one or more light-emitting members. This invention has several advantages over methods for displaying three-dimensional images in the prior art. It offers a wide range of motion parallax in different directions for multiple viewers, does not require glasses or head tracking, creates images with full potential for opacity and occlusion, and does not require coherent light.

摘要: The disclosure generally involves an optical (perhaps flat panel) display utilizing backside reflection for time-multiplexed optical shuttering. One display comprises a side-illuminated light guide associated with conditions for total internal reflection. A first surface of the light guide is elastomeric. Disposed against this elastomeric surface is an active layer that selectively deforms the elastomeric surface in locations that can correspond to display pixels. This resulting change in the geometry of the elastomeric surface can be sufficient to defeat the conditions for total internal reflection. When appropriate, light is reflected by the particular deformation and is ejected from another surface of the light guide. In this case, each location that allows light to exit could represent an activated display pixel. In certain situations, color flat panel displays of varying sizes may further implement field sequential color and time-multiplexed optical shuttering.

摘要: A voltage-controlled capacitor and methods for forming the same are described. A mechanical conductor membrane of the voltage-controlled capacitor is movable to and from a first position and a second position. An amount of capacitance can vary with the movement of the mechanical conductor membrane. A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) voltage-controlled capacitor can be used in a variety of applications, such as, but not limited to, RF switches and RF attenuators.
