Abstract: According to examples, apparatuses, systems, and methods for reconfiguring a multifunctional display panel are described. A display panel may include a polarization-dependent light modulation layer to modulate at least a phase of an incident light and to generate a modulated light. The modulated light is a function of at least one of a polarization state, a phase, or an amplitude of the incident light. One or more switchable polarization optical elements are operatively coupled to the polarization-dependent optical modulation layer. The one or more switchable polarization optical elements are to select an operational to mode of the display panel by adjusting the polarization state of the incident light to select the modulation applied to the incident light to generate the modulated light.

Abstract: Various embodiments set forth optical patterning systems. In some embodiments, an optical patterning system includes multiple liquid crystal (LC) layers and a substrate including circuitry that is connected to each of the LC layers. Each LC layer is independently addressable, via connections to the circuitry in the substrate, to modulate a different degree of freedom (DOF) of light, such as an amplitude, a phase, a distinct polarization component, or an amplitude or a phase of a polarization component of the light. In addition, each LC layer can be configured to operate in a non-resonant mode, in which light passes through the LC layer a single time, or in a resonant mode, in which light bounces back and forth between reflective layers multiple times to enhance the interaction with the LC layer.

Abstract: A device includes an array of light sources configured to emit light beams, and a metasurface including a plurality of nanostructures and configured to receive and deflect the light beams emitted by the array of light sources. The metasurface includes a plurality of regions. Nanostructures in different regions of the plurality of regions are configured to deflect center light rays (with peak intensity) of the light beams into different directions towards a target, such as display optics of a near-eye display. In some embodiments, nanostructures in each region of the plurality of regions are configured to deflect center light rays of light beams of two or more different colors into a same direction or similar directions towards the target.

Abstract: Various embodiments set forth light emission display elements, and display devices that include such display elements. In some embodiments, a display element includes an electroluminescent light source and a pair of reflective elements that form a resonant cavity for a particular range of wavelengths and/or a particular polarization of light. One or both of the reflective elements can include meta-reflectors, such as anisotropic meta-reflectors or chiral meta-reflectors. An optional waveplate can be placed between the reflective elements to adjust the polarization state of light emitted by the display element.
