An evaluation unit receives the data transmitted by the monitoring unit and generates a warning signal for an acoustic, visual and/or haptic warning and/or a steering intervention if the evaluation unit detects that a defined warning threshold lying within the warning zone is exceeded. The warning signal is issued only as a function of further planned driver-adaptive conditions.

Adaptive vision-based vehicle detection methods, taking into account the lighting context of the images are disclosed. The methods categorize the scenes according to their lighting conditions and switch between specialized classifiers for different scene contexts. Four categories of lighting conditions have been identified using a clustering algorithm in the space of image histograms: Daylight, Low Light, Night, and Saturation. Trained classifiers are used for both Daylight and Low Light categories, and a tail-light detector is used for the Night category. Improved detection performance by using the provided context-adaptive methods is demonstrated. A night time detector is also disclosed.

A method for detecting expansive static objects from a vehicle in motion. For this purpose, the method employs a front camera that interacts with an image processing device. The front camera can detect road markings on the road. A lateral detection device detects objects in the blind spot of the vehicle. Additional detection devices detect minimal distances to laterally passing or following vehicles. A logic unit links the data of the image processing device of the front camera to the data of the remaining detection devices in such a manner that expansive static objects in the front detection range of the vehicle are detected and are included as such in the detection of the lateral and rear detection devices using the logic unit.
