Imaging elements, such as photographic, electrostatographic and thermal imaging elements, are comprised of a support, an image-forming layer and an electrically-conductive layer comprising a dispersion in a film-forming binder of very small particles of antimony-doped tin oxide having a high antimony dopant level and a small crystallite size. Use of such particles provides a controlled degree of electrical conductivity and beneficial chemical, physical and optical properties which adapt the electrically-conductive layer for such purposes as providing protection against static or serving as an electrode which takes part in an image-forming process.

The present invention is a photographic paper which includes a paper sheet with a polyolefin resin layer on each surface of the paper sheet. The photographic paper includes a print retaining antistatic layer having a dry coverage of from 80 mg/m.sup.2 to 1000 mg/m.sup.2 on one of the free surfaces of the polyolefin layers. The print retaining antistatic layer includes a smectite clay, and a polymeric binder wherein the polymeric binder can sufficiently intercalate inside or exfoliate the smectite clay. The photographic paper can include a silver halide light sensitive emulsion layer on the other free surface.

A nanocomposite made with an inorganic layered material and a star-shaped polystyrene that can be blended with normal linear polystyrene is disclosed. The inorganic layered material can have an exfoliated structure, substantially exfoliated, or intercalated structure. The exfoliated structure can result in significantly improved physical properties, even with only a very low content of clay. The invention is also directed to a process that can be used to make the compositions of the present invention. In one embodiment, a physical mixture of clay and star polymer is prepared and then the mixture is heated for several hours, preferably under high-shear mixing, to increase the rate of exfoliation, after which mostly inexpensive commodity linear polystyrene polymer completes the composition.

This invention comprises a process for generating particles of MAg.sub.4 I.sub.5, wherein M is a monovalent cation, which comprises dissolving AgI and MI in a polar solvent followed by precipitating particles of MAg.sub.4 I.sub.5 by adding the solution to a nonpolar solvent. The resulting MAg.sub.4 I.sub.5 is in the form of anisotropic crystalline particles. The MAg.sub.4 I.sub.5 particles can be used in the preparation of a photothermographic element. The invention also comprises method of preparing a stable aqueous emulsion of MAg.sub.4 I.sub.5 particles.
