In a color picture tube in which an electron beam produced by an electron gun passes through apertures in a shadow mask structure and excites a phosphor screen, the shadow mask structure comprises a shadow mask having an electron beam penetration area and a frame portion supporting this shadow mask. The shadow mask is formed of a metal of a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the frame portion. The shadow mask has its periphery bent to form a skirt portion and the skirt portion is fixed by welding to the frame inner wall. The skirt portion is subject to an inward compressive stress from the frame portion, and by means of this stress deformation during the manufacturing process and during operation is prevented.

The shadow mask assembly includes a shadow mask and a frame. The shadow mask has a plate portion which is formed having a curved surface with a dome-like shape opposing the phosphor screen and regularly arranged apertures each for allowing the three electron beams to pass through, and a skirt portion extending from the peripheral portion of the plate portion along the tube axis. The frame surrounds the peripheral portion of the skirt portion of the shadow mask, and the frame and the skirt portion of the shadow mask are coupled to each other by welding at a plurality of locations. The frame is made of a metal material having a thermal expansion coefficient higher than the shadow mask.

A color cathode ray tube has a shadow mask. The shadow mask is composed of an almost rectangular mask body and an almost rectangular mask frame. The mask body has an effective surface facing a fluorescent screen, a non-aperture section surrounding the effective surface, and a bent skirt section formed on the periphery of the non-aperture section. The mask frame has a sidewall section provided on the skirt section of the mask body. In the shadow mask of such a configuration, a step section having a step in the direction perpendicular to the skirt section of the mask body is formed. With this configuration, the strength with which the curved surface of the effective surface of the shadow mask is enhanced, which prevents the color purity from deteriorating due to deformation and facilitates the formation of the shadow mask.
