A system and method for detecting, reporting, and repairing software defects in a wireless device is disclosed. The system has a wireless subscriber unit for communicating to a support server. The wireless subscriber unit maintains an action file indicative of the historical operation of the wireless subscriber unit. When the wireless subscriber unit detects a local defect or error, the action list is transmitted to the support server. The action file is used by support staff to identify and fix the error, and to prepare a repaired software file. The repaired software file is received at the wireless subscriber unit, and the user is notified that the defect has been fixed. Also, the wireless subscriber unit may receive status updates from the central server to inform the user of repair progress.

The wireless communications device simultaneously displays signal strength indicators of multiple radio access technologies on the multi-mode wireless communication device. In an exemplary method, the multi-mode wireless device determines a first signal strength of a first radio access technology and displays the signal strength in a designated annunciator area of a display of the device. The device then determines availability and signal strength for a second radio access technology and further displays a second signal strength indicator in the annunciator area corresponding to the second determined signal strength of the second radio access technology.

Systems and methods for interchangeable hardware components on a wireless communication device are provided. When a handset is powered up after having a hardware component replaced, the handset recognizes the presence of a new component. The handset then queries the component to obtain profile information about the component. The handset next queries an update server over a wireless communication network and requests an optimized device driver that will allow the handset to utilize the complete functionality of the new component. The update server responds with the executable device driver itself and an instruction set for installing the device driver. Upon receipt, the handset installs the device driver and reconfigures or reboots to complete the installation and configuration process.

A system and method for expiring a software module on a wireless communication device is disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, at the wireless communication device, an expiration notice for the software module and determining if license renewal of the software module is automatic. If the license renewal is not automatic, then the method includes notifying a user of the wireless communication device of the receipt of the expiration notice, and de-activating the software module upon receipt of instructions to not renew. In certain embodiments, the software module is de-activated after an expiration of a trial period if no instructions are received from the user in response to the notifying step. The method may further include sending the renewal instructions to the software module server upon receipt of instructions to renew, receiving an activation key from the software module server in response to sending the renewal instructions, and activating the software module utilizing the activation key. If the license renewal is automatic or receipt of instructions to renew are received, then the method includes sending the renewal instructions to the software module server, receiving an activation key from the software module server, and activating the software module utilizing the activation key.

Various trigger events may be stored in a data storage area on the device and new trigger events such as geographic locations where manual scans are frequently requested by the user or geographic locations where signal strength is low or the network signal is typically lost can be stored for future reference by the device in order to improve performance.
