The invention relates to a latch device for a pluggable opto-electronic module, such as an optical transceiver, for locking the module in a rail or cage system of a host machine. The latest generation of optical transceivers include all metal housings, instead of all plastic or partial plastic, to ensure adequate heat dissipation. The relatively heavier housings necessitate the use of more robust latch devices. The latch device according to the present invention includes a sliding element with arms extending therefrom for pivoting a latching hook out of engagement with the rail or cage system. In a preferred embodiment, a pair of latching hooks are provided, one on each side of the module. The latching hooks are mounted on the ends of spring arms, which extend from the same sheet of spring metal positioned across the bottom of the housing.

An optical coupler is coupled to the vertical cavity surface emitting laser, and has a plurality of optical fibers which receive light emitted from the vertical cavity surface emitting laser. The vertical cavity surface emitting laser is separated from the optical coupler by a gap and is free of direct contact with the optical coupler. The gap is less than about 50 microns, and is greater than zero microns. A curable adhesive is disposed in the gap for coupling the vertical cavity surface emitting laser to the optical coupler. The adhesive has a viscosity that defines a size of the gap.

The invention relates to modular heat-dissipating housing covers for opto-electronic modules, e.g. transceivers. The housing covers according to the present invention are constructed out of various different parts, which provide different levels of heat dissipation depending on the desired implementation, while maintaining a seal against EMI leakage. Extra heat sinking portions are provided to dissipate heat generated from specific heat generating sources. The extra heat sinking portions are configured into a shape and/or out of a material that provides more thermal dissipation than the standard cover provided. Independent control over the different heat sinking portions enables a better fit and appropriate dissipation.

A connector system for a removable transceiver module that interfaces with an electronic device, such as a computer, switch, subsystem, peripheral device, disk drive, tape drive and other input/output devices. The electronic device includes an enclosure having a bezel that has an opening for receiving the module. A circuit board is mounted within the enclosure. A guide member is mounted on the circuit board and is elongated between first and second ends along a first axis. A connector block is located at the first end of the guide member, while a door is pivotally mounted at the second end of the guide member. The module is slidably engageable with the guide member in a direction along the first axis. The module also includes electrical contacts electrically connectable with corresponding electrical contacts in the connector block. The door is pivotable between an open position exposing the opening in the bezel and a closed position where a portion of the door outside the enclosure covers the opening. The door effectively minimizes the likelihood of dust entering the electronic device. Preferably, to provide effective EMI shielding, the door and the bezel each comprise an electrically conductive material and are configured to make electrical contact with each other when said door is closed. The door may be positively latched in the closed position and spring biased toward the open position. The door preferably includes features for guiding and latching the module.

The present invention relates to an electronic module, such as an opto-electronic transceiver or a copper transceiver, for plugging into a host receptacle. In an effort to eliminate the use of costly and inefficient sheet metal spring fingers for reducing EMI emissions, the present invention proposes to use solid conductive projections extending outwardly from the sides and top of the module housing. However, in highly populated host receptacles, adjacent cages often share a common sheet metal wall, which will deform when a module with a solid projection extending therefrom is inserted, thereby making insertion of an adjacent module very difficult. The present invention eliminates this problem by vertically offsetting projections on the opposite sides of the housing so no two projections are in the same horizontal plane.

A method of cooling an optical transceiver that is mountable in a wall opening and a method of cooling a data transfer system in combination with an optical transceiver is described. An optical transceiver is provided that has a form factor and one end portion that is insertable within a wall opening in a wall. Ambient air is ventilated over a major surface portion of the optical transceiver by mounting said end portion to the wall opening so that at least one vent is formed within confines of the wall opening. The vent allows air to pass between the exterior and interior of the enclosure, and over the major surface portion of the optical transceiver.
