Toxic cyanide and anionic metal species are removed from aqueous alkaline solutions by contacting the aqueous alkaline solutions with an extractant compound which is capable of being protonated at a pH of 9 or above. Whereby the anionic metal species is extracted from the aqueous alkaline solution, subsequently stripping the metal values from the extractant and recovering the metal species, preferably by electrowinning. The process is useful in a flotation process in which a recycled aqueous process stream is employed in that the toxic cyanide ion and anionic metal species are removed prior to recycling of the aqueous process stream for flotation.

The process of recovering precious metals from ores containing precious metals, such as gold and silver, from an aqueous ammoniacal thiosulfate leach solution to provide a significant practical and economical process for the recovery of gold or silver is disclosed. After leaching of the ore with an aqueous ammoniacal thiosulfate solution, the leach solution is contacted with a precious metal extraction reagent to extract the precious metal values from the leach solution, after which the precious metal values are stripped from the extraction reagent to form a concentrated solution of the precious metal values from which the precious metals may be recovered by conventional methods such as electrolysis. The extraction reagents are those having guanidyl functionality or a quaternary amine functionality mixed with a weak organic acid such as a phenol. In the process, novel thiosulfate complexes of the precious metals are formed with the quanidyl or the quaternary amine extractants.

Reagents formulated by admixture of selected hydroxy aryl ketoxime and hydroxy aryl aldoxime extractants provide for efficient recovery of metal values, especially copper values, by solvent extraction processes. Specified kinetic and equilibrium conditions, which would require use of predetermined quantities of kinetic additives if ketoximes alone were employed or predetermined quantities of equilibrium modifiers if aldoximes were employed, are secured through formulation of reagents including both ketoxime and aldoxime extractants with less than the predetermined quantities of kinetic additive or equilibrium modifier. Reagents employed in methods of the invention may include from 0 to about 20 mole percent of a kinetic additive based on ketoxime content and also optionally a modifier of extraction and stripping equilibria in an amount providing a degree of modification of the aldoxime constituent of from about 0.75 to 1.0 and preferably from about 0.90 to 1.0.
