A method for separating an ionic substance from a liquid medium, which comprises including a metal ion, a metal oxide ion, a metal complex ion, ammonium compounds, etc. dissolved or dispersed in the liquid medium by using a fluorine containing compound of the following formula[{Rf-(A).sub.a -Y}(X).sub.b ].sub.n (Z).sub.ccontaining a fluoroalkyl group (Rf) having 3 to 20 carbon atoms and a group (Y) having affinity for the ionic substances. A composition for trapping ionic substances, comprising the aforesaid fluorine-containing compound as a main ingredient. The invention can be advantageously applied to the recovery of useful metals from ocean waters.

Liquid phase hydrocarbon fractions of wet natural gas streams which have been in contact while in the liquid phase with mineral particles entrained in the natural gas stream as it is recovered from the wellhead are found to contain a suspension of such particles. These particles contain loosely bound mercury which is capable of contaminating other constituents of the natural gas stream which come into contact with the particles. Effective procedures to purify such wet natural gas streams must include removal of the mineral particles as well as the element mercury dissolved in the liquid phase hydrocarbons or admixed with the vapor phase hydrocarbons.

A process for the extraction of metals selected from the group consisting of zinc (II), silver (I), cadmium (II), mercury (II), nickel (II), cobalt (II), and copper (II) from an aqueous solution containing, in addition to said metals, metals selected from the group consisting of calcium (II) and magnesium (II) is disclosed. The process comprises contacting the aqueous solution having an equilibrium pH within the range of about 0.2 to about 3 with an extractant. The extractant comprises an organic-soluble dithiophosphinic acid or ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal salt thereof represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, aralkyl and cycloalkylaryl radicals having from about 2 to about 24 carbon atoms and X is either hydrogen or an ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal salt forming radical.

Solvent extraction is used for selective recovery of a dissolved metal such as copper from an aqueous solution of metals by means of an organic liquid, immiscible with the aqueous solution and selective for the metal of interest. The metal is extracted from the organic liquid by means of another aqueous stripping solution. The metal values are sufficiently concentrated in the aqueous stripping solution to get continuous precipitation of a metal salt in a substantially pure form. The metal salt is separated, rinsed, and dried to form an intermediate product. Preferably, the metal salt is a sulfate which is then dehydrated and thermally decomposed to form metal oxide and sulfur dioxide. The metal oxide may be also considered as an intermediate product. It is also desirable to pyrometallurgically reduce the metal oxide until pure metal powder is obtained, or it may be cast into ingots.

Mercury and copper ions may be removed very selectively from aqueous solutions by means of a metal-chelating resin consisting of a polymer produced by the condensation of a phenolic component comprising one or more phenols, formaldehyde, and a diamino component comprising one or more di-(secondary amino) compounds under neutral conditions. The resin is prepared by condensing approximately equimolar quantities of a phenolic component comprising one or more phenols, and a diamino component comprising one or more di-(secondary amino) compounds with approximately twice the molar quantity of formaldehyde under Mannich reaction conditions.
