A composition comprising a chelating compound which is a macrocyclic compound containing at least two coordinating centers in the ring, at least one of which is a neutral base moiety, and an organic acid containing at least one alkyl or alkenyl group containing 8 or more carbon atoms. The macrocyclic compound contains at least 10 ring atoms and especially at least 12 ring atoms. The neutral base moiety is typically a nitrogen moiety. Preferably there are at least four coordinating centers at least two of which are neutral base moities. The acid can be an alkyl or alkenyl substituted acid for example a long chain carboxylic acid. The composition can be used as an extractant system for the selective extraction of metals from an aqueous phase into an organic phase.

In accordance with the invention, an improved process is provided for the efficient removal and recovery of silver from an impure solution containing silver ions which comprises contacting the silver-containing solution with an activated alumina adsorbent to selectively adsorb the silver ions from the solution and the lower the subsequent effluent discharge to less than 1 ppm silver, treating the activated alumina with a regeneration fluid to recover the silver ions from the adsorbent, and reducing the recovered silver ions to metallic silver.

When the cation of the complex is an alkaline earth metal cation then the support is preferably subjected to a pre-treatment with an alkali metal salt solution to effect an exchange reaction before the desorption step.

THE NOBLE METAL CONTANTS ARE REMOVED FROM THE NOBLE METAL PREGNANT SOLUTION BY DISPLACEMENT ONTO A NON-NOBLE METAL SURFACE. THE SOLID NOBLE METAL CONTAINING RESIDUE IS TREATED WITH SUFFICIENT AQUEOUS HYDROXIDE SOLUTION TO CONVERT EXCESS NON-NOBLE METAL INTO ITS WATER-SOLUBLE SALT. THE REMAINING INSOLUBLE MATERIAL CONTAINING THE NOBLE METAL RECOVERED IS RINSED TO REMOVE ANY REMAINING UNREACTED ALKALI AND THE SOLUBLE SALTS AND IS THEN DIGESTED WITH CONCENTRATED SULFURIC ACID TO DISSOLVE ANY REMAINING ACID SOLUBLE IMPURITIES, THE REMAINING ACID INSOLUBLE RESIDUE IS RINSED, DRIED AND COMPRISES SUBSTANTIALLY PURE NOBLE METAL.
