The present invention relates to a demodulator which receives a signal transmitted via phase modulation or multivalue QAM modulation, and decides transmitted data based on the received signal. The demodulator includes a pilot-based transmission-line estimation unit for estimating transmission-line characteristics by using pilot symbols. A data-based transmission-line estimation unit for estimating the transmission-line characteristics by using the tentatively decided data. At least one pilot symbol is received from a transmitter. The pilot symbol may be provided in a data frame of data symbols, or transmitted through a channel different from a channel of the data symbols. A first estimated value of the propagation characteristic of a propagation path is estimated by using the pilot symbol. The data symbols are tentatively determined based on an estimated value of the propagation path. A second estimated value of the propagation characteristic is estimated by using the pilot symbol and at lease one of the tentatively determined data symbols. The data symbols are finally determined based on the second estimated value of the propagation characteristic.

A communications device with the capability of accurately estimating Doppler frequency for improved wireless communication. At radio frame intervals, a complex time-domain response measurement unit obtains complex time-domain response signals representing the characteristics of propagation paths. A phase difference calculator then calculates absolute phase differences between a selected set of complex time-domain response signals, such as those having the largest magnitude in respective frames. In the case where such maximum signals change their time positions frequently, the time position of the maximum signal in a particular frame is selected, and the complex time-domain response signals extracted from that fixed position in consecutive frames are subjected to the phase difference calculation. The mean value of those absolute phase differences are calculated over a plurality of radio frames by an average operator. Finally, a Doppler frequency estimator estimates Doppler frequency by dividing the mean value by the time length of the radio frame.
