A packaging platform for optically coupling one or more optical waveguides of one or more optical components having the optical waveguide to one or more optical fibers is provided with a reference structure portion for the horizontal and vertical positioning of the optical component. The platform is further provided with one or more fiber positioning portions for inserting and holding the optical fiber and positioning the optical fiber at a position where the optical fiber is optically connected to the optical waveguide. The provided packaging platform and an optical module using the platform can simplify all alignment steps for optical coupling, electrical connection and sealing in the coupling of the optical component and the optical fiber.

A third-order nonlinear optical main chain polymer material contains a high .chi..sup.(3) component having no less than 3 but no more than 7 .pi.-conjugated bonding groups and having an electron donor in the main chain of the polymer through covalent bonds. The donor is preferably an alkylamino structure, more preferably a dialkylamino structure. Particularly preferred is a diethylamino structure. The high .chi..sup.(3) component is preferably a phenylene ring system of which phenylene rings are bonded through azo bonding groups with the phenylene rings and the azo bonding groups being positioned alternately. The polymer main chain is polyurethane or polyester. The third-order nonlinear optical main chain polymer material is prepared by polyaddition of a high .chi..sup.(3) compound, i.e., a precursor of the high .chi..sup.(3) component, having a hydroxyl group at each end with a diisocyanate compound or by polycondensation of the high .chi..sup.(3) compound with a dicarboxylic acid.

The present invention provides an optical waveguide device for optical wiring, and a manufacturing method therefor, which provides the advantages that simple and highly accurate connection is possible, the device is low in cost, and it is easily manipulated. The present invention is provided with connectors which are connected to optical fibers in a nonalignment via guide pins, and a polymeric waveguide comprising a film-shaped optical waveguide; the connectors are joined to both ends or to one end of the polymeric waveguide, and the connectors are formed by two connector parts which are arranged in facing position, and in the surfaces of the connector parts which are in facing position, a polymeric waveguide loading groove for loading the polymeric waveguide, and two guide pin loading grooves for loading guide pins are formed, and the polymeric waveguide is sandwiched between the two connector parts, and the polymeric waveguide is joined with the two connector parts and made unitary. By means of this, it is possible to easily conduct connection with optical fibers, and optical devices, planar optical waveguides, and optical fibers and the like can be connected easily and with a high degree of accuracy. Moreover, the construction is simple, so that it is possible to realize a reduction in cost, and it is possible to increase the ease of manipulation.

Of hydrogen atoms constituting 2-adamantylamino-5-nitropyridine, at least hydrogen atom of N--H part is substituted with deuterium to obtain a deuterated AANP. An organic optical material is made from the deuterated AANP. Content of the deuterated AANP in this case is preferably more than 25%. With this method, an organic nonlinear optical material can be provided for devices having a large wavelength conversion efficiency in wavelength conversion relating to optical communications wavelength region, particularly at and around 1.55 .mu.m wavelength.

A laminated optical medium for read-only information recording has ultra-high memory capacity and reliably extracts desired information from laminated memories. Methods for low-cost mass production of laminated read-only medium are demonstrated. The optical medium is a lamination of planar type waveguides made of polymeric materials, in which each waveguide has information recorded as periodic scattering factor to generate scattered light by injection of input light into a waveguide layer. Therefore, read-only information recording medium of ultra-high memory capacity, equivalent to the memory capacity achievable by volume holography, can be produced by using a low-cost planar holographic technique. The laminated medium is simple and energy conserving, because it does not require rotation mechanisms for reproduction of music and video holographic recordings. The medium is ideally suited as identification card, because the card is difficult to counterfeit and a high level of extra information can be stored conveniently for use in a wide range of potential applications.

An optical fiber coupler reinforcing member comprises an approximately rectangular member formed by a hard material, and has a flat surface along the longitudinal direction thereof. In addition, the shape thereof in cross-section is a hexagonal shape which inscribes a cylindrical member. Furthermore, a recess having a U-shaped cross-section is formed in the longitudinal direction of the above-mentioned approximately rectangular member and houses coupling section. The coupling section housed within the recess is fixed at both ends of the recess by an adhesive or the like. In addition, both ends of the inner wall surface of the recess have been given bevel sections. As a result, the optical fiber coupler reinforcing member having high reliability at low cost, with which the strength with respect to external force is improved and with which processability and the assembly operations of the optical fiber coupler are easy, are provided.
