The UV crosslinking compound of the present invention is characterized in having the following chemical formula, and has high photosensitivity. Accordingly, the crosslinking reaction can be accomplished within a short period of time. Thus, if this compound is employed in the alignment film for a LCD component, it becomes possible to carry out a sufficient alignment treatment with UV irradiation over a short period of time. An alignment layer for use in liquid crystals including a macromolecular material deposited on a glass substrate, the macromolecular material composed of main molecular chains which are, on the average, aligned in a first direction. A series of parallel microgrooves are formed in the macromolecular material and aligned perpendicular to the first direction, each microgroove being separated by a ridge having a triangular cross-section, and each ridge having first and second sides meeting at an apex, wherein the first side has a shorter length than the second side. As a result, disclination does not occur and sufficient reliability against external forces and heat may be obtained. In addition, numerous methods are disclosed for forming the alignment layer.

An orientation film for a liquid crystal display. The film is formed on a substrate and has a first irregular form repeated in a first direction and a second irregular form repeated in a second direction, which is perpendicular to the first direction. The second irregular form has a longer pitch than the pitch of the first irregular form. The profile of the second irregular form in any plane perpendicular to the first direction has a portion inclined with respect to the substrate. The pretilt angle of the orientation film is high. The patterns may be irregular and asymmetric, which may be ridges separated by a continuous groove. The orientation may be formed by using a first mold having one of the patterns, and a second mold with a second pattern, or first and second holographic exposed layers. The orientation layer may be a liquid crystal polymer which is formed by using a heated stamper to form a pattern in a high polymer liquid crystal while applying a voltage.

A liquid crystal display having heat resistance, a sufficiently large pretilt angle, and capable of preventing generation of domains and improving the reliability thereof is disclosed. Each alignment layer has, on the surfaces thereof, roof-like concave and convex rows, formed by repeatedly, in a first direction, forming convex portions each consisting of a longer side portion and a shorter side portion, and valley-like concave and convex rows having the height that is lower than that of the roof-like concave and convex rows and formed in the same direction as that of the roof-like concave and convex rows in such a manner that the roof-like concave and convex rows and the valley-like concave and convex rows are adjacently and alternately formed. Thus, concaves and convexes having a unit length of repetition, that is shorter than a unit length of repetition of the concaves and convexes formed in the first direction, are formed in a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction. Furthermore, the alignment layer is made of a compound having main chains, that are stable with respect to UV light, and side chains, each of which has an aliphatic ringing group to which aromatic groups are bonded, and which cross-link between the main chains, wherein the aromatic groups are aligned substantially in the first direction.

Each concave portion has a specific vertical section which passes through a deepest point of the concave portion. The internal shape of the specific vertical section is defined by a first curve, which extends from one point on the peripheral edge of the concave portion to the deepest point of the concave portion, and a second curve, which extends continuously from the first curve and from the deepest point of the concave portion to another point on the peripheral edge of the concave portion. The average of the absolute value of an inclination angle of the first curve relative to the substrate surface is larger than the average of the absolute value of an inclination angle of the second curve relative to the substrate surface.
