One aspect is a method of writing an input image data value to a display element in a electronic display. The method includes receiving an input image data value, and quantizing the image data value based on a threshold. The threshold may be modulated based on a voltage drive signal provided to the display element in the electronic display. The method may also write the quantized image data value to the display element.

In one aspect, data is written to a display and a position of display elements is maintained based on the application of a bias voltage pattern. The bias voltage pattern includes alternating polarities along one dimension in a pattern having a first frequency spectrum, and alternating polarities along a second dimension in a pattern having a second frequency spectrum that is different than the first frequency spectrum. At least one of the first and second frequency spectrums may include a plurality of frequency components.
