An organic electrolyte battery of this invention includes: a positive electrode comprising a positive electrode active material; a negative electrode comprising a negative electrode active material; an organic electrolyte comprising at least an organic solvent and a solute dissolved in the organic solvent; and an additive that suppresses an increase in internal resistance. The additive includes at least one of phthalazone and a phthalazone derivative. The addition of the additive to the battery suppresses an increase in internal resistance upon storage and upon charge/discharge cycling, thereby making it possible to improve the storage characteristics and charge/discharge cycle characteristic of the battery.

The non-aqueous electrolyte battery of the present invention has a negative electrode comprising metallic lithium, a lithium alloy or a material capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium; a positive electrode; a non-aqueous electrolyte comprising a solvent and a solute dissolved in the solvent, wherein the above non-aqueous electrolyte contains at least one additive selected from phthalimide, derivative of phthalimide, phthalimidine, derivative of phthalimidine, tetrahydrophthalimide and derivative of tetrahydrophthalimide. On account of the effect of the above additive, the nonaqueous electrolyte battery of the present invention is not liable to cause an increase in the internal resistance during a long-term storage at high temperatures, and the charge/discharge cycle characteristics are improved in a secondary battery.

In a non-aqueous electrolyte comprising an organic solvent and a solute dissolved in the organic solvent, a lithium salt containing at least one organic anion selected from phthalimide, a derivative of phthalimide, phthalimidine and a derivative of phthalimidine is used as the solute. Such non-aqueous electrolyte is not liable to react with the negative electrode in a primary battery and a secondary battery during a long-term storage at high temperatures. As a consequence, by using this non-aqueous electrolyte, a non-aqueous electrolyte battery having an excellent storage property can be obtained; and the charge/discharge cycle characteristics are improved in a secondary battery.

There is provided a thin air battery comprising a power-generating element including air diffusion paper and a water repellent film, the power-generating element sealed in a package composed of first and third sheet layers that cover the air electrode side and negative electrode side of the power-generating element, and a second sheet layer disposed in the peripheral portion between the two sheet layers and joined to the two sheet layers. The sheet layers are each composed of a thin film formed by stacking an alkali resistant polymer film having hydrogen gas permeability and a polymer film having gas barrier properties, and in each of the first and third sheet layers, the polymer film having hydrogen gas permeability is disposed on the internal surface side. According to the present invention, a thin air battery that has high energy density and has excellent long-term reliability is provided.

The alkaline battery has excellent high-rate discharge characteristics.

A non-aqueous electrolyte lithium secondary battery comprising a negative electrode of spinel-type lithium-titanium oxide with improved overcharge and overdischarge characteristics is disclosed. In this battery, the rechargeable electric capacity of the negative electrode is adjusted to be smaller than that of the positive electrode. In a preferable mode, the negative electrode may further comprise a material which has more negative potential than that of the lithium-titanium oxide, and shows electrochemical reversibility. An electrolyte comprising ethylene carbonate and LiN(CF3SO2)2 or LiN(C2F5SO2)2 is preferable.

The invention provides a lithium secondary battery with improved withstanding overcharge and overdischarge characteristics which employs a cathode active material of lithium-containing manganese dioxide having a crystal structure of the Ramsdellite-type. An electrolyte combined with the cathode includes LiN(CF.sub.3 SO.sub.2).sub.2 as a solute. The solute is preferably dissolved in ethylene carbonate. A graphite or LiAl alloy is applied for an anode. LiAl alloy is corrosion-resistant, thereby improving high temperature as well as charge-discharge cycle life characteristics.
