A scanner useful as an input device to a television or like display is operable while manually zooming and cropping the image projected onto an image sensor. A fixed image is supported on a movable, hand-manipulated stage that interactively controls the conjugate distances of the optical system so that zooming and cropping is obtained without losing focus. Since zooming the image affects the level of illumination impinging upon the sensor, an automatic brightness circuit varies the illumination according to the signal level. A manually operated altering circuit allows additional user-selected variation of the illumination level. By situating manually operated altering switches on the movable stage, a single hand can control zooming, cropping and brightness without having to interact with a keyboard or like input controls on the display.

A stereoscopic electronic viewer for a stereo image pair provided in a fixed medium includes a light source which passes light rays through the fixed images of the stereo image pair. The rays project onto a mirror which redirects the rays through a lens unit. The light rays from each image are associated with a particular lens in the lens unit which focuses the image onto an associated CCD image sensor. The two CCD image sensors have separate but synchronized electronics and provide a synchronized output which is fed to a stereo viewing device such as stereo goggles or a time-multiplexed polarized display. The electronic viewer is mechanically designed to manipulate the image produced on the display device to allow for panning and zooming of the stereoscopic image while maintaining the full resolution provided by the image sensor.

A server fulfills region and time of interest (RTI) requests for images from multiple users. The server includes a receiver for receiving a RTI request from a user, a processor for assembling a compressed image based on the RTI request, and a transmitter for transmitting the compressed image to the user. The processor is configured to extract a first portion of the compressed image from a local storage device. If the first portion is insufficient to fulfill the RTI request, the processor is configured to request a second portion of the compressed image from another server, and combine the first and second portions of the compressed image to fulfill the RTI request from the user. The compressed image includes an image compressed by a JPEG 2000 compressor.
