Abstract: In a playback system employing a stylus to recover recorded signals from a video disc when relative motion between the disc and the stylus is established, a rotary stylus cleaner is provided. A freely pivoted, light stylus-arm carrying the stylus is mounted in a housing employed for movement of the stylus between a rest position and a play position. A rotary brush having an axis of rotation perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stylus-arm, is located in the path of movement of the stylus between the rest position and the play position. A friction wheel mounted on the axle carrying the rotatable brush, engages the turntable and causes rotation of the brush as the stylus threads through the brush during its travel between the rest position and the play position. A comb having its teeth in engagement with the bristles of the brush is secured to the board for the purpose of cleaning the brush.

Abstract: In a video disc playback system including a motorboard, a turntable, an information disc, a stylus, a stylus arm, and a stylus arm carrying structure, a universal stylus arm pivot coupling is provided for coupling the stylus arm to the carrying structure. The coupling comprises a generally horseshoe-shaped stylus arm holder affixed to the stylus arm. A plug, having a tapered end with a substantially circular cross-section, is fastened to the first leg of the arm holder. A support member, also generally horseshoe-shaped, is attached to the carrying structure. An opening, having dimensions permitting only a partial entry of and presenting complementary bearing surfaces for smooth engagement with the plug, is disposed in the first leg of the support member. A spring is connected between the second legs of, respectively, the arm holder and the support member. The spring member persistently urges the plug into the opening and provides tracking pressure between the stylus and the disc during playback.

Abstract: A capacitive type video playback system includes an elongated tracking arm supported within a conductive housing having a first portion substantially parallel to the conductive housing bottom surface and a second portion sloped toward an opening in the conductive housing bottom surface. A tracking stylus is supported by the tracking arm such that the longitudinal axis of the stylus is substantially normal to the major surface of a disc record when the tracking stylus engages the disc record groove. Detachable connector means may be provided for supporting the tracking stylus in proper operating position and for electrically connecting the stylus conductive electrode to the playback system signal processing circuitry. The moving mass which must follow vertical and lateral warpage of the disc record groove is reduced by a yieldable suspension member connected between the tracking stylus and tracking arm. A second yieldable suspension member connected between the tracking arm and a support supports the tracking arm in a manner which enables it to follow vertical and lateral warpage of the disc record groove communicated to the tracking arm through the first suspension member.

Abstract: In a playback system employing a stylus to recover recorded signals from a video disc when relative motion between the disc and the stylus is established, a rotary stylus reshaper is provided. A freely pivoted, light stylus-arm, carry the stylus, is mounted in a housing employed for movement of the stylus between a rest position and a play position. A rotatable drum, having an axle of rotation perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stylus-arm, is located under the stylus when the stylus is at the rest position. The drum has a plurality of circular and coaxial grooves, concentric with the drum, the grooves having walls of abrasive material dimensioned and configured for the purpose of reshaping worn stylus to a desired shape. A friction wheel, mounted on the axle carrying the drum, engages the turntable and causes rotation of the drum when the stylus is lowered into an abrasive groove, permitting reshaping of the stylus. Means, which may be manually or automatically actuated, are provided for lowering and raising of the stylus into and out of engagement with an abrasive groove on the drum when the stylus is at the rest position. A cleaning brush having its bristles in contact with the drum is secured to the board for the purpose of cleaning the drum.
