Abstract: A high-bulk yarn having interlaced filaments substantially free from loops, and preferably having spherical knops affecting the yarn as a whole, is made by subjecting a continuous filament (or less preferably a staple fiber) yarn to the action of a turbulent fluid in a suitable nozzle, into which the yarn is fed nonaxially so that it rubs against one wall thereof. If desired more than one yarn can be employed, making a single composite yarn. The invention includes also a nozzle, preferably having its yarn input opening flared to provide for the necessary friction of the yarn against the side of the nozzle.

Abstract: TEXTILE ARTICLES COMPRISE YARNS OF A SYNTHETIC THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL, EXPECIALLY POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE, IN WHICH THE INDIVIDUAL FILAMENTS COMPRISE ZONES OF AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT THICKNESS, THE THICKEST HAVING THE LOWEST CRYSTALLINITY AND ORIENTATION AND VICE VERSA; THE FILAMENTS ALSO HAVE A NONSPIRAL THREE-DIMENSIONAL CRIMP, AND THEY, AND THE YARNS COMPRISING THEM HAVE HIGH APPARENT VOLUME. THE YARN IS MADE BY ONLY PARTIALLY STRETCHING THE INITIAL YARN IN AT LEAST TWO STAGES, DURING AT LEAST ONE OF WHICH THE YARN IS IN CONTACT WITH A CRACK OR FILLURE PROMOTING AGENT, AND SUBSQUENTLY GIVING THE YARN, BEFORE OR AFTER IT IS MADE UP, A HEAT TREATMENT WHILE IT IS IN A RELAXED STATE.

Abstract: The invention comprises textured continuous filament yarns of a synthetic thermoplastic material, especially a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate in which each filament comprises, on the microscopic scale, alternating zones whose diameter increases and decreases progressively between at least two different mean values, the zones of smaller diameter corresponding to zones of higher crystallinity index and higher molecular orientation and vice versa, each filament having a large apparent bulk, and the yarn as a whole having tridimensional crimp. Preferably the filaments have similar, though somewhat attenuated, differences along their length on a macroscopic scale, giving them a knop appearance. The yarns are made by partially stretching a multifilament yarn in the presence of a crack-producing agent, such as an aqueous lower alkanol at ambient temperature, giving the partially stretched yarns a thermal treatment in a relaxed condition, and subjecting them to a twist-set-untwist treatment, in which the heat setting step may also provide part of or the whole of the said thermal treatment.

Abstract: The specification discloses an apparatus for interlacing continuous filaments to form a yarn having a coherent structure, due to the action of at least one high velocity fluid jet. Extending through a main body member of the apparatus is a keyhole cross section passage having a cylindrical portion through which the filaments run, and an isosceles trapezoidal cross section prismatic portion into which the fluid jet is symmetrically projected.

Abstract: Textile articles comprise yarns of a synthetic thermoplastic material, especially polyethylene terephthalate, in which the individual filaments comprise alternating zones of increasing and decreasing thickness, the thinner zones having the higher crystallinity index and vica versa; the filaments have a nonspiral three-dimensional crimp, and both they, and the yarn comprising them, have a high apparent volume. The yarn is made by only partially stretching the initial yarn in contact with a crack promoting agent such as an aqueous alcohol, and subsequently giving the yarn, before or after it is made up, a heat treatment while it is in a relaxed state.

Abstract: Continuous filaments of thermoplastic material are provided wherein such filaments contain a helicoidal curling and/or a residual twist couple. The filaments have a cross section which is substantially the shape of a bean, such cross section varying slightly along the length of the filaments. The filaments are produced by a process which comprises creating an initial twist in an individual strand or in an assembly of a number of strands having a high count per strand and a small number of strands per assembly; thermally treating the twisted strands or assembly of strands; blocking such twist at a point; and separating the single strand or assembly of strands at such point and winding them up. Such a process is characterized in that the point of separation of the yarn is located immediately at the outlet of the heat treatment yarns while the yarns are still in a plastic state. The apparatus necessary for carrying out such process comprises a delivery means for providing the yarn by unwinding, means for separating the strands or assembly of strands, means for initiating the twisting, means for heating the twisted yarn, and means for receiving the yarn. Such apparatus can additionally contain drawing means.

Abstract: Fancy yarns are made by subjecting yarns of a synthetic thermoplastic material, especially polyester yarns, to partial stretching, e.g. by a factor of 1.5-3.5, in contact with an aqueous lower alkanol or other crack-producing agent, followed by a heat relaxation treatment, the said or other heat treatment, or a supplementary stretch, being applied intermittently or to a continuously varying degree. The yarns obtained have a flake appearance and comprise alternating thick and thin portions, the diameters of the thick and thin portions both varying macroscopically, and the thick parts varying in diameter on the microscopic scale, the zones of smallest diameter corresponding to zones of highest crystallinity and orientation. The thin parts may vary in diameter microscopically in an analogous way but with smaller variations, or may be substantially uniform.
