Abstract: An improved process for the production of springy, textured thermoplastic yarns wherein the yarns are compacted and compressed in an enclosed space by means of a flow of compressed fluid heated at a temperature that allows for the fixing of the yarn, a portion of the fluid affecting the movement of the yarn and another portion escaping to the side from the enclosed space, such process being characterized in that the escape of fluid is effected at a pressure which is lower than the feed pressure, but higher than atmospheric pressure. The apparatus for effecting such process comprises a suction nozzle constituting a passage for the yarn and a delivery tube for admission of pressurized fluid, a tubular chamber communicating with the nozzle, and having orifices therein, a housing defining a closed space enclosing at least a portion of the length of the tubular chamber and having a pressure regulation system associated therewith, and means for controlling the discharge of the treated yarn.

Abstract: A high-bulk yarn having interlaced filaments substantially free from loops, and preferably having spherical knops affecting the yarn as a whole, is made by subjecting a continuous filament (or less preferably a staple fiber) yarn to the action of a turbulent fluid in a suitable nozzle, into which the yarn is fed nonaxially so that it rubs against one wall thereof. If desired more than one yarn can be employed, making a single composite yarn. The invention includes also a nozzle, preferably having its yarn input opening flared to provide for the necessary friction of the yarn against the side of the nozzle.

Abstract: Yarns showing novel color effects varying along their length are made by feeding a thermoplastic yarn into a confined space, so forming a long stack of uniform cross section of folded yarn in the said space, by means of a jet of fluid at a temperature sufficient to set the resulting crimp in the yarn, and feeding a dye solution, preferably two or more dye solutions at different locations to the same cross section of the stack, under conditions such that the resulting intensity of color of the yarn due to each dye falls off across the stack from the point or points of application.
