Prepolymer polyols containing mesogenic moieties useful as reactants for the preparation of resinous materials are disclosed. Synthesized by condensing a polyether polyol with bifunctional mesogenic diacids, or diesters, the compounds of the invention are characterized by their reasonably low melt temperature which renders them suitable as additive materials in polymeric molding compositions and as precursors for the preparation of resinous materials.The liquid crystalline properties of the prepolymers of the invention were found to depend on the type and molecular weight of the glycols and on the molar ratio between the glycols and the mesogenic reactant.

A process for preparing a block oligocarbonate is disclosed. The oligocarbonate conforms to ##STR1## where R denotes hydrogen or ##STR2## and where A denotes an aromatic carbonate structure conforming to ##STR3## where Ar is an aromatic radical, n is 2-6 and where B is the residue of an aliphatic polyol is disclosed. In the process a high molecular weight aromatic polycarbonate is reacted, in the melt and in the presence of a catalyst, with an aliphatic polyol. The block oligocarbonate is useful as a reactant in a process for the preparation of copolymers.

Coated substrates having an ultrathin, single-layer or multilayer coating of organic polymer material have been found, in which coated substrates the polymer used is a polyester of the structure ##STR1## wherein A is the skeleton of an aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic diol,B is the skeleton of an aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid,n assumes values from 2 to 80 andat least one of the substituents R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 represents an aliphatic radical having an essentially normal chain and the other radicals in each case denote hydrogen or methyl, the aliphatic radical having at least 8 C atoms and it being possible for bonding of the aliphatic radical having an essentially normal chain to the skeleton A or B also to take place via groups containing heteroatoms, and, where there are two aliphatic radicals having an essentially normal chain on one skeleton, these radicals are identical, and furthermore R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 together may form an alkylene chain.Such coated substrates can be produced by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The stated polyesters are novel intermediate products for these coated substrates.

A dihalobenzenoid compound is reacted with a dihydric phenol containing an azo group in the presence of a base, an organic solvent and an azeotrope former. Dihydric phenols which do not contain azo groups may also be included in the reaction mixture. This reaction is generally carried out at a temperature of from about 20.degree. to about 250.degree. C. under an inert atmosphere. The polyether obtained is represented by the formula[--O--[E--O].sub.z --E'].sub.x [O--E"--O--E'--].sub.yin which E, E', E", x, y and z have the meaning specified herein.

Coated supports of this type may be produced by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The polyurethanes mentioned are novel intermediates for these coated supports.
