A sheath introducer for a catheterization or similar procedure comprises a main body having an exterior tapered sidewall, an interior lumen, a beveled top surface and an annular boss extending from the top surface; a rotating section having an exterior sidewall, an interior lumen, a beveled bottom surface having a recessed portion dimensioned so as to be received within the main body annular boss, and a top surface having an annular shoulder extending therefrom creating a recess; a cannula extending from the bottom end of the main body; and, a hemostatic valve having an access port and a fluid tight slit opening and seated within the upper portion and maintained by a cap, the valve being maintained within the rotating section recess and preferably slightly compressed when the rotating section and main body are assembled. When assembled, the rotating section can rotate up to approximately 180.degree., affording approximately a 45.degree. angle between the main body lumen and the rotating section lumen while maintaining an open passageway for insertion of catheters or other objects. Optionally, an angled sideport in fluid communication with the main body lumen extends from the main body.

A method for performing intraocular brachytherapy and an apparatus for performing the same is disclosed. The apparatus preferably comprises a hand-held delivery device that advances a radiation source into an associated cannula or probe that is positioned adjacent the target tissue. The handpiece provides for shielded storage of the radiation source when retracted from the cannula and includes a slider mechanism for advancing and retracting the radiation source. The radiation source is mounted to a wire that has a flexible distal end and a relatively stiffer proximal end. A positioning system for the cannula is also disclosed.

One or more treating elements, such as a capsule or pellet containing radioactive material, is positionable within the lumen and movable between the proximal and distal end portions under the force of liquid flowing through the lumen. A method for using such apparatus, including a method for using such apparatus simultaneously with a balloon angioplasty procedure, is disclosed.

The sterile sleeve/connector assembly includes a joint formed between a sterile sleeve and a connector. The sleeve is made of a tube of thin flexible material, the connector includes a hub having an annular groove therein, and the joint includes an O-ring which is positioned within a bight of an inwardly inverted end portion of the sleeve and within the groove of the connector hub. The apparatus used in forming the assembly comprises a barrel member having a lumen, a distal end and a proximal end. The barrel member has a diameter approximately equal to a diameter of the hub the connector and less than the diameter of the sleeve. The method for using the apparatus comprises the steps of (a) pushing the O-ring onto an outer surface of the barrel member at the distal end of the barrel member; (b) sliding a sleeve over the barrel member; (c) inverting an end portion of the sleeve into the distal end of the lumen of the barrel member; (d) sliding the hub of the connector into the inverted end portion of the sleeve at the distal end of the lumen; (e) forcing the O-ring off the distal end of the barrel member, into a bight of the inverted end portion of the sleeve and into the annular groove in the hub of the connector; and (f) removing the connector from within the barrel member and pulling on the connector until the entire sleeve is removed from over the barrel member.

A stent delivery system and method. A stent is routed to a desired position within a vessel within a subject. A delivery wire is routed out an opening in a delivery catheter and looped over a portion of the stent and then routed back inside the delivery catheter. At an extreme distal end of the stent, the wire again exits the delivery catheter, reengages the stent and is pushed back into the catheter center passageway. This compresses the stent into a form whereby the delivery catheter can be maneuvered through a vessel to position the stent. To release the stent from the delivery catheter, the delivery wire is retracted so that its distal end passes out both pair of openings in the delivery catheter allowing the stent to expand into engagement with the vessel wall.
