摘要: A multilayered submersible structure has an outer coating that is disposed in contact with water in which the structure is submerged, a current distribution layer or charge distribution layer, an electrical conductor connectable in electrical communication to a source of electrical power, and a support structure. By selectively energizing the current distribution layer, or charge distribution layer, chemical and ionic changes can be caused in the water immediately adjacent the outer coating or layer to inhibit the growth of marine organisms on the outer surface of the submersible structure.

摘要: A marine fouling inhibiting system comprises first and second conductors which are made of a polymer matrix, such as vinyl ester, and a suspended conductor, such as graphite powder or particles. This type of conductive material is formed to provide two sections of a boat hull so that a source of electrical current can be used to reversibly cause an electric current to flow to and from the conductive coatings. The conductive coatings are electrically insulated from each other in order to force the formation of an electrical circuit which includes the two conductive coatings, the source of electrical current, and the water in which the boat hull is disposed. This results in the creation of chlorine bubbles on the conductive surfaces. Chlorine bubbles on the boat hull surfaces discourage the formation of marine growth, such as barnacles.

摘要: A method for operating a system which inhibits the growth of marine organisms on a submerged surface causes a current to flow to one of two submerged surfaces over a time period that is selected as a function of the magnitude of the current and the area of the surface. In other words, the time period is determined as a function of the current density applied to the surface. In a particularly preferred embodiment the current density is maintained at approximately 35 milliamps per square foot and the time period is approximately four minutes. At the end of the time period, the current is reversed and a second submerged surface is polarized in a similar manner.

摘要: An environmentally friendly, formaldehyde-free, aqueous binder composition that includes a carbohydrate, a crosslinking agent, and a pre-reacted product of an alcohol or polyol and monomeric or polymeric polycarboxylic acid or polyglycerol is provided. The pre-reacted product may include glycerol and esters of citric acid such a monoglyceryl citrate, diglyceryl citrate, and triglyceryl citrate as well as other higher molecular weight citric acid-based esters. The inclusion of the pre-reacted product in the binder composition helps to speed the crosslinking reaction, induces faster water evaporation, decreases the viscosity of the binder, helps to reduce the amount of water needed for application of the binder, decreases tackiness, and helps to achieve a maximum vertical expansion of the insulation pack in the transfer zone. The binder composition may be used in the formation of insulation materials and non-woven chopped strand mats.

摘要: A corrosion inhibiting system is provided with the ability to allow both primary and secondary portions of the circuit to be used in the alternative without having the primary and secondary systems interfere with each other by operating at the same time. By incorporating a continuity controller, such as a switch or a diode to selectively disconnect the sacrificial anode from the circuit, the primary and secondary systems can both be provided on a marine vessel, but used independently from each other. In that way, the primary and secondary corrosion inhibiting systems are prevented from interfering with each other during normal operation.

摘要: Antifouling materials are used to provide first and second layers or coatings on a submersible object. The first and second layers are visually distinct from each other, such as being made of two distinct colors, so that the ablation of an outer layer will be evident when an inner layer is exposed to show a different color in the regions of ablation. The materials for the first and second layers can be chemically active to cause the antifouling nature of the materials or can be electrically conductive to permit their use in the creation of either chlorine bubbles on the wetted surface or a change in ionic characteristic of water in contact with the wetted surface.

摘要: A restoration process for restoring surface porosity defects resulting from the casting process in metal cast products. The areas of a cast product having surface porosity defects are identified and the areas not containing surface porosity defects are masked using an adhesive, reusable, rubberized mask. The masked surface is subsequently cleaned and a metal spray is applied to the surface porosity defects. The mask is removed and the restored surface porosity defects are hand finished to create a cast product having less than 0.05% surface porosity.

摘要: An aluminum silicon die cast alloy having a very low iron content and relatively high strontium content that prevents soldering to dies into die casting process. The alloys of the present invention also have a modified eutectic silicon and modified iron morphology, when iron is present, resulting in low microporosity and high impact properties. The alloy comprises 6-22% by weight silicon, 0.05 to 0.20% by weight strontium and the balance aluminum. Preferably, the alloy of the present invention contains in weight percent: 6-20% silicon, 0.05-0.10% strontium, 0.40% maximum iron and most preferably 0.20% maximum iron, 4.5% maximum copper, 0.50% maximum manganese, 0.60% maximum magnesium, 3.0% maximum zinc, balance aluminum. On cooling from the solution temperature, the strontium serves to modify the eutectic silicon structure as well as create an iron phase morphology change if iron is present, facilitating feeding through the aluminum interdendritic matrix. This, in turn, creates a finished die cast product with extremely low levels of microporosity defects. The strontium content also appears to create a non-wetting monolayer of strontium atoms on the surface of a molten casting, preventing die soldering, even at very low iron contents. The alloy may be used to cast any type of object and is particularly suited for casting outboard marine propellers, driveshaft housings, gear case housings, Gimbel rings and engine blocks.
