摘要:
A reader interrogates a transponder attached to a remote object. The transponder includes a microstrip patch antenna having two segments connected together by a switch, each segment being one-half wavelength, the antenna being a full wavelength at the frequency of the interrogating signal. In response to a control signal, the switch is opened and closed, thereby coupling and decoupling the two segments of the microstrip antenna. When the switch is in the closed position, the two segments are out-of-phase with one another, thereby producing a maximum reflected signal. When the switch is in the open position, the two segments act in concert to produce a minimum backscattered signal. The backscatter signal is thus modulated in accordance with the control signal and is received at the reader where it is subsequently decoded to identify the remote object.

The invention provides a microstrip patch antenna for emitting backscatter-modulated signals in response to a received signal. The antenna has two segments that are connected together by a switch. When the switch is ON, the antenna is a full wave length antenna with its two segments out-of-phase with each other, thus producing minimal backscatter. When the switch is OFF, the two segments of the antenna act in concert with each other to produce a backscatter-modulated signal. Multiple pairs of such antennas can be connected together to make a single antenna with increased signal power.

The circuitry introduced in this invention selectively slows down the functioning of an electronic circuit maintaining a particular state for a prolonged period of time. This circuitry is used not only to achieve the desired effect in maintaining security from electronic thieves trying to circumvent codes but also in other applications such as enabling a circuit to continue to function in the event of a brief loss of power. For example, in an RFID system, if a reader is frequency hopping, a tag loses power for as long as about 400 milliseconds when the reader changes to other frequencies. In a preferred embodiment, the disclosed circuitry is used in conjunction with a destruct sequence.

A system and method of inventorying multiple objects utilizing a multi-level or a chained radio frequency identification system. The system includes a master tag and a plurality of upper level tags and lower level tags associated with respective objects. The upper and lower level tags communicate with each other and the master tag so that reading of the master tag reveals the presence and absence of upper and lower level tags. In the chained RF system, the upper and lower level tags communicate locally with each other in a manner so that more remote tags that are out of range of some of the upper and lower level tags have their information relayed through adjacent tags to the master tag and thence to a controller.

Methods and apparatuses for extracting information from a database based on tag data are provided. One method includes interrogating a plurality of RFID tags coupled with objects within in an area to obtain tag data. The contextual environment of the area is determined based on the tag data. A search of a database relating to an item in the area is conducted. Relevance rankings of search results are adjusted based upon the determined contextual environment. Search results can be displayed in order of relevance rankings.

Embodiments of the present invention include systems with Readers and Tags in which a Reader queries the Tags with a parameter that includes a level of probability of reply according to which the Tags individually and randomly decide whether or not to reply. In one embodiment, the Tags can switch between two states: A and B. The query command also specifies a state (A or B) so that only the Tags in the specified state can reply. After successfully sending the Tag identification data from a Tag to the Reader, the Tag switches to the other state from the specified state. In one embodiment, the operations about the two states are symmetric. In one embodiment, the Tags can remember the parameters used in a query so that a short form of query command can be used to repeat the query with the same query parameters.

Methods and Apparatuses for RFID with Huffman encoded commands are provided. Each command of a plurality of commands is Huffman encoded. A rarely used command of the plurality of commands has more command bits than another command of the plurality of commands. The plurality of commands includes QueryA, QueryB, QueryRep, ACK, and NAK.

Methods and apparatuses for configuring antennae of radio frequency identification reader systems. In one aspect of an embodiment, a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader system, includes: a receiver; a radio frequency (RF) source for signal transmission; and a switch matrix coupled with the receiver and the radio frequency sources to selectively couple the receiver and the radio frequency source to a plurality of non-collocated antennae. When in a first mode, the switch matrix connects the radio frequency source to a first one of the antennae for signal transmission and the receiver to a second one of the antennae for signal reception; and when in a second mode, the switch matrix connects the first one of the antennae for signal reception and, in one example, the second one or another one of the antennae to the RF source for signal transmission.
