We disclose a colorless composition comprising metal particles (e.g., silver nanoparticles) and water, wherein said particles comprise an interior of elemental metal (e.g., silver) and an exterior of metal oxide (e.g., one or more silver oxide(s)), wherein the metal nanoparticles are present in the water at a level of about 5-40 ppm, and wherein the composition manifests significant antimicrobial properties. Methods of use of the composition are described. The composition can be incorporated into a hydrogel with essentially no loss of antimicrobial properties. Various metal-containing compositions with unexpected biological efficacy are also disclosed.

A sprayable hydrogel wound dressing composed of an aqueous solution of neutralized Carbopol and silver hydrosol of silver nanoparticles electrolytically formed from silver metal without the use or inclusion of organic materials. The hydrogel is sprayed with a physical barrier sprayer system which separates the hydrogel from the propellant. The hydrogel is thixotropic/shear thinning so that the viscosity of the hydrogel is sufficient reduced in the sprayer to allow spray formation and regains sufficient viscosity to resist running when deposited on a vertical surface.

An apparatus and method for producing colloidal silver. A large-volume container, such as a fifteen gallon container, includes a hinged lid on which a rotational impeller is mounted along with several sets of electrodes that are electrically connected to a power transformer. The container is partially filled with water, and when the lid is closed, the sets of electrodes are disposed in communication with the water in a predetermined arrangement, and the impeller resides submerged in the water. Certain of the electrodes constitute silver wire. The power transformers convey current to the electrodes, preferably alternating current, at voltages sufficient to cause silver particles to separate from the silver wire and enter the solution in a stable, suspended state. The impeller is rotated, preferably continuously, to prevent the suspended silver from remaining in upper levels of the water, thereby dispersing the silver particles more uniformly throughout the volume of water.

An embodiment of an apparatus for adjusting a distance between an electrode and a liquid includes a control circuit and a sense circuit. The control circuit is configured to couple an applied calibration signal to the electrode, and to cause a motor to position the electrode a distance from the liquid in response to a sense signal. And the sense circuit is configured to generate the sense signal in response to the applied calibration signal. For example, such an apparatus can be configured for use as part of a system for producing a stable solution of suspended silver. As silver-containing electrodes shorten over time, and as the level of solution changes over time, the apparatus can move the electrodes toward or away from the solution to maintain the respective distance between each electrode and the solution within a range that has been shown to produce a solution of suitable quality.
