    摘要: A method of forming a preform or blank for a high bandwidth gradient index optical filament, the preform itself and the resulting optical filament is disclosed. The preform which ultimately forms the optical filament includes a barrier layer between a tubular starting member which comprises the cladding and the core, the index of refraction of the barrier layer being equal to or less than the index of refraction of the tubular starting member; there being no step increase in the index of refraction of the barrier layer at the barrier layer-cladding interface nor of the core at the core-barrier layer interface of the optical filament. The barrier layer is formed from a base glass, a first dopant B.sub.2 O.sub.3, and at least one other dopant which is maintained substantially constant in the barrier layer and then gradually varied during the formation of the core. The quantity of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 is also maintained substantially constant in the barrier layer but then gradually decreased during the formation of the core.

    摘要: An apparatus is provided for forwarding communications automatically. The apparatus includes a processing element that receives data from a local connection point or a network element regarding the presence of a device at or near the local connection point or other location. The device is associated with a first communications terminal and transmits a signal that can be detected by the local connection point or the network element. Upon receiving the data, including an indication of the presence of the device, the apparatus may automatically forward communications from one or more communications terminals to a particular communications terminal, as specified by forwarding instructions. The forwarding instructions may be provided by a user ahead of time or included in the data received by the apparatus, and the instructions may be stored in a storage element of the apparatus. Systems, methods, and computer program products for forwarding communications automatically are also provided.

    摘要: Apparatus for and method of communicating over a local area network is disclosed. Multiple nodes are connected by an optical fiber in a ring architecture. The cable supports multiple subcarrier multiplexed data communication channels for transmitting and receiving message data between the nodes and a control channel for partitioning nodal access to the individual data channels. Tokens are circulated on the control channel indicating the status of each data channel. A node desiring to send, acquires an open data channel by marking the corresponding control channel token to show that the selected data channel is no longer available, inserts the node destination address into the control channel token, and transmits data on the acquired data channel. A node recognizing its address in the control channel token's destination address field for a particular data channel tunes its receiver to accept data on that channel.

    摘要: Optical communication methods and apparatus are disclosed for transmitting two or more optical signals with different optical carrier frequencies on a single optical fiber with high spectral efficiency. Each optical carrier is typically modulated with multiple modulated subcarriers. In one embodiment, an optical phase modulator provides cancellation of second order intermodulation products in each optical signal, thereby permitting the optical carrier frequencies to be spaced by 2f.sub.max, where f.sub.max is the maximum modulation frequency. In another embodiment, a single sideband optical phase modulator provides cancellation of second order intermodulation products and one signal sideband, thereby permitting the optical carrier frequencies to be spaced by f.sub.max. Quadrature optical phase modulators for simultaneous transmission of two independent baseband digital data signals or two independent subcarrier multiplexed signals are disclosed.
