A laminated cutting element for use on a rotary-type earth-boring drill bit for drilling subterranean formations preferably including at least one first segment formed of a hard, continuous-phase material impregnated with a particulate superabrasive material laminated to and including at least one second segment formed of a continuous-phase material having essentially no particulate superabrasive material impregnated therein. Alternatively, the at least one second segment may have superabrasive and/or abrasive material impregnated therein which is less abrasive than the superabrasive material impregnated in the at least one first segment. Preferably, the continuous-phase material in which the at least one first segment and the at least one second segment are made is a metal matrix material. A further alternative of the present invention includes a single segment formed of a continuous-phase material in which a particulate superabrasive material is impregnated. The alternative single segment has a relatively thin cross-sectional thickness and is securable to a support member preferably fabricated from a tough and ductile material. The support member further includes a bit attachment portion securable to a bit body and a segment-receiving portion adapted to receive and support the superabrasive impregnated segment during drilling. A yet further alternative of the present invention includes a composite segment formed of a continuous-phase material wherein a preselected portion of the segment is impregnated with a particulate superabrasive material.

A drill bit for drilling subterranean formations includes a device to provide a "universal" effect between the shank and crown for self alignment of the crown with the bore hole in the formation. The bit is suitable for downhole assemblies configured for straight drilling, directional drilling and navigational drilling. The device can be incorporated into both drag bits and roller-type "rock" bits. Preferred embodiments include a flexible sub connecting the crown to the shank portion and having reduced stiffness relative to the drill string. Alternatively a spherical universal joint or trunnion type universal is used. Replaceable lugs increase durability and reliability of the universal. The device equalizes the loads on cutters while reducing wear, average loads, and impact loads on cutters. Bore hole diameter and chatter of the bit in the bore hole are reduced, promoting maximum efficiency and rate of penetration as wobble and precession are minimized.

A cutting element having a substantially planar table of superhard material mounted on a substrate or backing. The superhard material table, the substrate, or an insert placed between those two components provides additional stiffness to the cutting element and resistance to bending and impact loading experienced by the cutting element when drilling a formation. The additional stiffness reduces fracture of the table of superhard material and, if the reinforcing member or portion is formed of an abrasion and erosion resistant material, the cutting element will wear linearly at a reduced rate due to the enhanced volume of such material. The thicker or reinforced portion of the cutting element extends linearly, and if the cutting element is circular, extends diametrically. Cooperative arrangements of such cutting elements are also disclosed.

A drill bit for use with earth drilling equipment, the drill bit having a body and movable cutting members or blades variably positionable between a first position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is generally equal to or less than the diameter of the drill bit body and a second position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is greater than the diameter of the drill bit body. The second, expanded position is assumed by the cutting members when they are in contact with the bottom of a hole and are thereby urged upwardly relative to the bit body. The first, retracted position is assumed by the cutting members when the drill bit is being tripped into or out of the hole and, because the cutting members are essentially retracted relative to the bit body, the drill bit does not become jammed downhole. A fixed-blade adaptation of the invention is also contemplated.

A drag-type drill bit for boring an earth formation having a plurality of cutting elements formed thereon. Each cutting element includes a cutting surface having a cutting edge formed thereon. During boring, the cutting edge is embedded into an earth formation so that the formation is received against a portion of the cutting surface. As the cutting surface advances against the formation, a chip forms. The chip has a first surface directed generally toward the cutting surface and a second surface directed generally in the direction of cutting element travel. A number of different embodiments are disclosed which include means formed on and in the cutting surface for communicating drilling fluid pressure via slots or discontinuities to a location on the cutting surface relatively close to the cutting edge. Drilling fluid pressure across the chip is thus equalized thereby preventing the chip from being urged against the cutting surface due to the difference between the formation pressure and the drilling fluid pressure.
