    摘要: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for regulating traffic in a Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). Terminal adapters interface between terminals and the B-ISDN. Whenever a first terminal wishes to transmit a data message to a second terminal, the source adapter, connected to the first terminal, allocates transmit bandwidth for the transmission of the message and sends a request message to a destination adapter, connected to the second terminal, for checking availability of and allocating receive bandwidth. The data message is sent only if bandwidth has been allocated on both ends. Overflow traffic is throttled at the adapters before it enters the network, thereby reducing the number of data cells lost because of the limited storage of the network.

    摘要: An initialization arrangement is disclosed that allows call services defined in service profiles stored in a switching system to be enabled for individual terminals in a multipoint configuration without requiring assignment of terminal endpoint identifiers or virtual channel identifiers at subscription time. The call services are enabled for a terminal when the terminal transmits two identifiers to the switching system, one identifier defining the terminal and the other identifier defining a service profile. The switching system includes the identifier of the service profile in broadcast messages to address terminals with features defined by that service profile. Two embodiments of the invention are disclosed, one applicable in a narrowband integrated service digital network (ISDN) and the other applicable in a broadband ISDN (BISDN).

    摘要: A method and apparatus for decreasing delay and use of data processing resources in the reliable transmission of data frames in a packet network. In transmitting data from a source to a destination over a plurality of intermediate data switching points, the data processing required for each frame is selectively varied at each data switching point, according to the requirements for transmission of data frames of a message and of the succeeding link used for that message. A virtual link address is transmitted with each data frame which is translated into the mode of processing the frame at the data switching point, and into the virtual and real address of the next data link. Advantageously, such an arrangement allows for minimizing the data processing load and delay at each protocol handler of the data path through the packet network.
