A structure that possesses the combined properties of carrying signals through the provision of a series of electrical conductors, and by optical signals through the intermediary of a series of optical waveguides. This imparts a particular advantage thereto for the fabrication of optical data links, providing a convenient, compact method of interconnecting electrical paths to transducer chips and to waveguide structures. This approach solves the problem of connecting polymer waveguides to VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity-Surface-Emitting Laser) arrays, thereby avoiding the problem of damaging fragile wire bonds. A method is also provided which utilizes the foregoing structure.

The invention provides a newly designed head mounted virtual image display that is dramatically less in weight than is known in the art by virtue of a unique beam folding design, making possible wearable computer systems of significantly greater convenience and acceptability to a wide range of users. The unit may be used comfortably in conjunction with eyeglasses. Optical systems according to the invention are provided that are advantageous for use with emissive, transmissive and reflective microdisplays, and which provide high optical performance, compact design and clear see-through properties. Also, the invention provides an improved method of illumination for reflection liquid crystal microdisplays. This makes possible optical systems for virtual image displays of improved field of view, compactness, and shorter image path combined with good efficiency.

A sliding light shield may be incorporated for those instances when see-through capability is not desired. A focus adjustment may be incorporated to permit the focusing of the image, for example, at a distance of approximately 18 inches to infinity. An adjustable headband may be incorporated that adapts to fit the users head. A flexible boom structure may be incorporated to facilitate fine positional adjustment of the optical assembly. A slider and ball joint mechanism may also be incorporated to facilitate positional adjustment of the optical assembly. A built-in microphone may be incorporated to enable speech input by the user. The head mounted virtual image display unit may be used comfortably in conjunction with eye or safety glasses, and provides a useful image to the user without blocking his view of the surrounding environment. The unit is designed to have a pleasing appearance so as to greatly enhance user acceptability.

A simplified method of forming a phase shift structure for a lithographic mask includes the conformal deposition of a phase shift material, preferably having an index of refraction similar to that of the mask substrate, over a patterned layer of opaque material and exposed areas of the mask substrate corresponding to the pattern. The thickness of the opaque patterned layer, in combination with the conformal deposition preferably establishes a differentially altered optical path length to produce a phase shift which enhances contrast and increases illumination and resolution in fine patterns. In variant forms of the invention, the conformal deposition of either phase shift material or a sidewall spacer material is followed by an anisotropic removal of material to form the phase shift structure. The application of phase shift material over the mask surface increases durability of the mask and also enhances contrast of images produced with other phase-shift mask feature structures, such as Levenson-type shifters.

Selective deposition of silica from a liquid phase solution of silica in hydrofluorosilicic acid through openings in a pattern of polyimide or similar organic material provides an optically improved phase shift mask structure for making lithographic exposures since deposition can be made substantially anisotropic to yield deposits of substantially uniform thickness. Deposition from the liquid phase is readily controlled and highly predictable control of deposition rate can be achieved by control of temperature of a low temperature deposition process. Therefore the optical quality of the mask need not be compromised by other structures, such as etch stop layers, otherwise necessary to achieve high phase shift accuracy and the deposits of phase shift material are substantially homogeneous. The process of deposition from the liquid phase can be stopped and started at will and the mask can be fabricated by a process which is substantially free from material-dependent or material-based process restrictions. The index of refraction of the deposited material can also be adjusted by annealing.

This printing apparatus and technique incorporates a color transfer station to impart a desired color to a fusible ink layer on a ribbon. The color transfer station is located between a supply reel providing the ribbon for printing, and the location where actual printing occurs. This color transfer technique is particularly suitable for use in resistive ribbon thermal transfer printing, where economical use of the ribbon is mandatory. The structure for transferring color to the ink layer of the ribbon utilizes wicks, felt-coated rollers, nozzles, etc., to bring a selected colorant solution into contact with the ink layer of the ribbon, in accordance with the color desired for printing.
