The invention is applicable to all kinds of displays based on the principle of duty cycle modulation.

The present invention relates to a method for displaying an image in an active matrix display device and more particularly in an active matrix OLED (Organic Light Emitting Display) display. The purpose of this invention is to increase the video dynamic range of each color component. The voltages applied to the OLED cells are based on reference voltages or currents. According to the invention, a different set of reference voltages is used for each color component. To this end, the video frame is divided into at least three sub-frames and at least one color component of the picture is addressed during each subframe with a set of reference voltages adapted to said color component.

In a sequence of changeable filters three different primary colour filters and three corresponding secondary colour filters are arranged in such a way that primary colour filters are arranged adjacent their respective complimentary secondary colour filter. Different brightness values are achieved by the imaging device passing on light to a screen as light pulses of corresponding different duration. White light is produced by subsequently illuminating a secondary and a corresponding complementary primary colour segment during corresponding time durations.

The event in time is recognized for a higher accuracy mode of the two modes. The event is predicted in a lower accuracy mode of the two modes by determining a time when the event occurred between frames in the lower accuracy mode. The event in the higher accuracy mode is synchronized to the lower accuracy mode to provide sub-frame accuracy alignment between the two modes. In one embodiment of the invention, the common event includes the closing of a clap slate, and the two modes include audio and video recording modes.

A temporally recursive chrominance signal noise reduction can be achieved by subtracting a delayed version of the chrominance output signal from the chrominance input signal and by multiplying the related difference signal by a variable share factor and adding the resulting signal to the chrominance output signal, for achieving different degrees of noise reduction. From the difference signal a motion representative value and a value representing the presence of a smear effect are calculated and used to calculate the variable factor. After having been multiplied by this factor, the difference signal is combined with a frame-delayed version of the chrominance output signal in order to form the noise-reduced chrominance output signal.
