    摘要: A power line communications apparatus and method for providing communications over power leads connecting two pieces of electrical equipment. One power lead is split into similarly sized first and second parallel conductors. The first and second conductors pass through a current transformer, the first conductor having a load current flow opposite the second conductor with respect to the current transformer. The transmitted communications signal is applied to the secondary of the current transformer and is induced on the primary of the transformer, namely a loop formed by the first and second conductors. A second current transformer serves as a receiving transducer and senses the communications signal on the first and second conductors.

    摘要: A picosecond short cavity dye laser utilizes a piezoelectric translator to vary the length of the optical cavity in the laser to allow continuous tuning of the output wavelength. The laser includes a pair of closely spaced generally flat mirrors forming an optical cavity. A laser dye solution is inserted into the cavity. The short cavity laser is pumped by pulses from another laser to produce picosecond output pulses. The piezoelectric translator, which is attached to one of the mirrors, moves the mirror to tune the laser as an applied DC voltage is varied. The piezoelectric tuning of the dye laser allows the laser to operate in a tunable single axial mode.

    摘要: A method of determining whether arcing is present in an electrical circuit includes sensing a change in current in the circuit and developing a corresponding input signal, analyzing the input signal to determine the presence of broadband noise in a predetermined range of frequencies, and producing a corresponding output signal, and processing the input signal and the output signal in a predetermined fashion to determine whether an arcing fault is present in the circuit. The processing includes determining a type of load connected to the electrical circuit, based at least in part upon the input signal and the output signal.

    摘要: An arc fault circuit interrupter system for use with an electrical circuit includes an arcing fault detector which monitors the electrical circuit and a controller which generates a trip signal in response to the detection of arcing faults. The controller may also generate one or more communication signals corresponding to information relating to the operation of the arcing fault circuit interrupter. The system may also include one or more of the following: a communication port which communicates to a user the information relating to operation of the arc fault circuit interrupter in response to the communication signals; a memory for retaining predetermined information related to the condition and operation of the arcing fault circuit interrupter, with or without a backup memory; and a combined self-test/reset switch.

    摘要: A number of methods can be used for zone arc protection to detect series and/or shunt arcing faults in various electrical components and/or circuits. A differential current detector, or a di/dt based detector, may be used to detect shunt arcs, while a differential voltage detector or a zero-sequence voltage detector, is used to detect series arcs. A differential phase current detection scheme may be used for both shunt arcs and series arcs. Series arcs may also be detected using a voltage drop system or a line power loss system. Detection of arcing in joints may be monitored directly. A ground fault detector may be combined with one or more of these systems for detecting a ground fault in the circuit to be protected. Two or more of the above systems or detectors may be combined for arc monitoring and detection.

    摘要: A current sensor has a closed loop magnetic hoop with a gap and a central aperture for receiving a conductor. An IC chip incorporating a Giant MagnetiResistive (GMR) sensor is positioned in the gap to provide a measure of the current in the conductor. A relatively small current transformer provides the necessary information about the direction of the current to an electronic trip unit for a circuit breaker as well as power supply for the IC chip and the trip unit. The trip unit operates in the presence of AC and DC faults. In a three phase power system, a single GMR chip in the proximity of three closely spaced phase conductors, together with a current measurement from the neutral line, enables trip units to operate on the occurrence of AC and DC faults.

    摘要: A current interrupter in which a first movable, insulating, gear carries a contact blade. The blade extends out from this movable gear and forms a contact which makes and breaks with a stationary contact upon movement of the gear. A second insulating gear has a set of teeth which engage the teeth on the first gear. The second gear has a cavity into which the extended contact fits. Movement of the first gear in a direction to break the contact, causes the engaged teeth to drive the extended contact into the cavity, thereby insulating the movable contact from the stationary contact. The interlocking gear teeth create a tortuous path for the arc and provide a large over surface distance for dielectric strength.

    摘要: A fault detection system is provided for a power distribution system having at least first and second line conductors carrying AC currents that are out of phase with each other from a source to a load, and a common neutral conductor. The system includes an arcing fault current sensor comprising a coil wound on a hollow core and coupled to both of the line conductors in a manner that the electrical currents in the line conductors flow in opposite directions inside the hollow core, thus inducing in the coil an output signal that is a function of the difference of the electrical currents in the line conductors. A neutral current sensor produces an output signal representing the magnitude and phase direction of current in the neutral conductor. An arcing fault detection circuit includes a processor programmed to (1) respond to a change in the first output signal to analyze the second output signal to determine whether the change in the first output signal is attributable at least in part to current in a line-to-line circuit, (2) if the answer is affirmative, determine a scaling factor to be used to adjust the value of the first output signal, and (3) analyze the adjusted first output signal to determine whether an arcing fault has occurred and produce a trip signal in response to the detection of an arcing fault.
