Disclosed is a negative electrode active material which is capable of occluding and releasing lithium, and has high reversible capacity and reduced initial irreversible capacity. This negative electrode active material includes a granulated substance, in which a composite containing nanosize conductive carbon powder and tin oxide powder contacting the surface of the conductive carbon powder in a highly dispersed state and an aggregate selected from the group consisting of graphite and nongraphitizable carbon are aggregated. The electrochemical decomposition of electrolytic solution is suppressed due to a reduction in the area where the carbon material in the granulated substance and the electrolytic solution are in contact, resulting in a significant reduction in the initial irreversible capacity of the negative electrode active material.

A lightweight material for decorative parts having a silver metallic color tone is provided. The material includes a sintered body including a main hard phase composed of a solid solution formed of titanium carbonitride and titanium carbide; a main binder phase composed of nickel; a first additive material composed of at least one selected from the group consisting of molybdenum carbide, niobium carbide, tungsten carbide, and tantalum carbide; a second additive material composed of at least one of chromium and chromium carbide; and the balance being incidental impurities. The N content in the sintered body is 2.0% to 6.0% by mass. The color tone of the sintered body satisfies L*=9 to 14, a*=−2 to 3, and b*=−6 to 0, which are values of the L*a*b* color system measured with a spectrophotometric colorimeter.

An alloy tool of hard metal has a working part and a non-working part. The working part is made of a hard metal containing carbide of at least a metal selected from a group of elements belonging to the groups IVa, Va and VIa of the periodic table as a basis metal of the hard phase and an iron family metal as a basis metal of the binder phase. The working part includes a region for working a work piece. The non-working part is made of a hard metal containing carbide of at least a metal selected from a group of elements belonging to the groups IVa, Va and VIa of the periodic table as a basis metal of the hard phase of the non-working part and of an iron family metal as a basis metal of the binder phase of the non-working part. A diffused junction between the working and non-working parts bonds the two parts together. The non-working part has a higher thermal expansion coefficient than the working part, whereby the non-working part, through the diffused junction, applies a residual compressive stress to the working part for an improved tool strength.
