A solution of an active protein substance and an inactive protein substance is reacted with a cross-linking agent, optionally in the presence of an inert carrier, under cross-linking conditions to produce articles comprising both active and inactive protein substances. The active protein substance comprises up to about 20 percent, e.g. from 1 to 20 percent by weight, based on the final weight of the total protein substance, whereas the cross-linking agent comprises from 0.5 to 8 percent by weight, based on the weight of the total treated mixture. Articles containing active proteins, such as enzymes, crosslinked to an inactive protein are prepared by dispersing and reacting in a solvent an active protein and an inactive protein simultaneously with a crosslinking agent to crosslink the active and inactive proteins together. The degree of crosslinking can be controlled by introducing tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane in an amount sufficient to stop chain growth. Optionally, an inert carrier may be present during crosslinking. The resultant crosslinked active and inactive proteins can be in various forms such as solutions, suspensions, gels, films, membranes, granules, pills or tablets.

The invention pertains to a method for the study of the behaviour or detection of cells, organites or cellular fractions, possibly present in a medium.It comprises providing said medium with the essential nutrients to promote the activity of the said cells, organites or cellular fractions, if any, as well as with an "electron transporter" such as lipoic acid which is liable of forming a redox system and of intervening in one of the metabolic routes involved by the above said activity, particularly growth of cells.The method of the invention then further comprises measuring and detecting a possible modification of the relative proportions of the oxidized and reduced form of the "electron transporter". The time required for such modification to possibly take place, as well as other parameters of the reaction can then be correlated to the presence in the medium concerned of a cellular activity or analogous.
