A method for the manufacture of patterned microparticles comprises immobilizing microparticles, including nanoparticles, to be patterned on a surface of a porous membrane, causing an inorganic or organic coating material which can bind to exposed surfaces of said microparticles, and which can permeate through the pores of said membrane, to flow relative to said immobilized microparticles, and removing the microparticles from the membrane following binding of said coating material. The method enables one to prepare a wide range of anisotropically-modified patterned microparticles, including microparticles patterned with nanoparticles or a biomolecular material such as DNA and protein. The patterned microparticles produced can be used in wide range of applications in health, information and communication, and sustainable environment such as shelter, clothing, energy, food, transport and security.

The present invention provides fabrication methods using sacrificial materials comprising polymers. In some embodiments, the polymer may be treated to alter its solubility with respect to at least one solvent (e.g., aqueous solution) used in the fabrication process. The preparation of the sacrificial materials is rapid and simple, and dissolution of the sacrificial material can be carried out in mild environments. Sacrificial materials of the present invention may be useful for surface micromachining, bulk micromachining, and other microfabrication processes in which a sacrificial layer is employed for producing a selected and corresponding physical structure.

In certain embodiments, a single photomask acts as an area-selective filter for light at multiple wavelengths. A single set of exposures of multiple wavelengths through this photomask may make it possible to fabricate a pattern comprising discontinuous multiple regions, where the regions differ from each other in at least one chemical and/or physical property, without acts of alignment between the exposures. In certain embodiments, the surface includes molecules attached thereto that can be photocleaved upon exposure to a certain wavelength of radiation, thereby altering the chemical composition on at least a portion of the surface. In some embodiments, the molecules attached to the surface may include thiol moieties (e.g., as in alkanethiol), by which the molecule can become attached to the surface. In some embodiments, the molecules may be terminated at the unattached end with photocleavable groups. In other embodiments, a molecule that was photocleaved may be exposed to another molecule that binds to the photocleaved molecule. In certain cases, the molecules may be terminated at the unattached end with hydrophilic groups that may, for example, be resistant to the adsorption of proteins. In other cases, the molecules may be terminated at the unattached end with end groups that are not resistant to the adsorption of proteins. In certain embodiments, the techniques are used to pattern simultaneously two different regions that are resistant to the adsorption of proteins, and a third region that does not resist the adsorption of proteins.

A system and method for loading and processing of transaction data is provided. The system and method can obtain transaction data for commercial cards from many feeds with different data formats. A generic file parser is easily modified to account for different data feed formats. Further processing of the transaction data includes sorting the data into multiple temporary tables, which are then resorted in other sorting and processing operations to properly prepare the data for loading into tables in a database. These tables in the database greatly improve the information available to many different parties who need to access the transaction data in the database. The system and method provides the ability to quickly format large amounts of data and insert it into a database with minimal time.
