A polymerization catalyst for polyester production which contains neither a germanium compound nor an antimony compound as a major component. It contains aluminum as the main metallic ingredient, has excellent catalytic activity, and gives a polyester which is effectively inhibited from suffering thermal degradation, during melt molding, without deactivating or removing the catalyst, and is excellent in thermal stability, stability to thermal oxidation, and hydrolytic resistance. The polymerization catalyst contains as a first metallic ingredient at least one member selected among aluminum and compounds thereof and further contains a phosphorus compound represented by a specific chemical formula. The polyester produced with this catalyst is usable as fibers, films, sheets, various moldings including hollow moldings, etc.

Heat-shrinkable polyester films, each having a heat shrinkability of 40% or higher in the main shrinkage direction of the film after treatment in hot water at 80° C. for 10 seconds, the change of heat shrinkability in the main shrinkage direction of the film after treatment in hot water at 55-75° C. for 10 seconds before and after the film is left under an atmosphere at 40° C. for 160 hours being 15% or lower, exhibit beautiful shrinkage finish in appearance involving only rare occurrence of shrinkage spots, wrinkles, strains, folding and other defects during shrinkage in the step of shrinking with hot air, and in particular, exhibit a quite small lowering in shrinkage finish after a lapse of time for storage and have low spontaneous shrinkability; therefore, these films are suitably used for applications such as labels and cap seals.

The present invention related to a thermoplastic resin composition for masterbatches, comprising an organophosphorus compound represented by General Formula (1): wherein R1 and R2 each represent an organic group or a halogen atom, and m and n each represent an integer of 0 to 4, and when m or n is an integer of 2 to 4, R1 and R2 may be the same or different, and a thermoplastic resin, wherein the thermoplastic resin composition for masterbatches contains a phosphorus content of 5000 ppm or more. The thermoplastic resin composition for masterbatches can easily be molded even when it has high phosphorus content and thus flame retardancy.

The invention provides a polyester produced in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst comprising at least one compound selected from a group consisting of aluminum compounds and at least one compound selected from a group consisting of phosphorus compounds and being excellent in color tone, thermal stability, and transparency and improved in terms of insoluble particles. Particularly, the invention provides a polyester in which the content of an aluminum containing insoluble particles in the polyester is 3500 ppm or lower and a polyester which has a haze value of 2% or lower when being formed into a monoaxially oriented film. The aluminum catalyst for attaining these characteristics and properties may be polyester polymerization catalyst obtained by mixing an aluminum compound and a phosphorus compound in a solvent and has specified spectral characteristics in the side measurement of 31P-NMR spectrum and 27Al-NMR spectrum.

This invention provides a novel polycondensation catalyst using no antimony compound, polyester produced by using the same, and a process for producing polyester. A novel catalyst comprising an aluminum compound and a phosphorus compound is used as the polycondensation catalyst in producing polyester. The polyester of this invention can be applied to fibers for clothes, fibers for industrial materials, various films, sheets and molded articles such as bottles and engineering plastics, as well as coatings and adhesives.
