Highly alkaline detergent compositions are prepared by mixing together, in a mixing device, a melt of alkaline material with a heat-alkaline sensitive material, such as, an alkali metal complex phosphate sequestrant and/or an active-chlorine source. The resulting mixture is, then, pelletized on a chill belt. Because of the short contact time between the molten alkaline material and the sequestrant and the rapid solidification, reversion of the sequestrant, particularly, a phosphate sequestrant, is substantially reduced.

The resulting mixture is, then, pelletized on a chill belt. A source of solid active chlorine pellets is combined with the pelletized mixture. Chlorine degradation is essentially eliminated by combining the alkaline material pellets with the pelletized chlorine source.

The present invention relates to cost-effective and environmentally friendly polyester surfactants containing a condensation esterification product of a polyhydric alcohol, a multimeric acid, and at least one polyalkylene glycol for use in flotation deinking under traditional alkaline, reduced alkali, and true neutral deinking conditions. The polyester deinking surfactants of the present invention will effectively exhibit greater selectivity than traditional flotation deinking surfactants. In particular, the polyester deinking surfactants can give better foam control, improved yield, and no loss in ERIC reduction.

Methods of sizing paper using a latex as a surface sizing agent are described, in which the latex is defined by acid number or particle size. Further described are methods of improving toner adhesion of papers that are surface sized with alkenylsuccinic anhydrides by employing latexes that have a glass transition temperature of from about 25 to about 65. Still further described are low shear methods of dispersing alkenylsuccinic anhydrides in sizing compositions using latexes as dispersing aids.

A method of emulsifying a substituted cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride sizing agent such as alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA), primarily for papermaking operations, uses a cationic reaction polymer synthesized from an epihalohydrin and a polyamine, preferably a polyalkyleneamine. The synthesis of the reaction product is controlled to obtain a polymer end product viscosity, by Brookfield, ranging between 50 and 300 cps at 25° C. and at 30 to 35% solids. Alternatively, the preferred cationic polymers can be described as having an intrinsic viscosity value in a 0.2M NaCl solution of 0.18 to 0.35 dL/gm at 30° C. The polyamine-epihalohydrin polymers can also be optionally used in combination with a surfactant for further emulsifying of the ASA size.
